Re: When can a car be disqualified?

My son had a similar incident when his car was to race at the District races (top two from each Pack in the District). After passing inspection, and several heats into the race, the announcer suddenly summoned my son forward (I went with him), the person in charge of placing the cars on the track (t...

Re: What if you didn't have to obey the rules? :)

With so little in the way of rules, who says you have to stay on the track? You could trigger a catapult device to launch your car (depending on what kind of finishline judging system you have). Then you would not have to worry about wheels, axles, etc., at all -- though you may want to provide hard...

Re: Slow or Fast? A unique perspective.

Hey Nitro, welcome to the forum. The Walton Derby looks like a lot of fun -- but "Turtle" races (as they are often called, though several other names exist) have been around for many years. Typically, they are held after the regular races. Search "turtle" on this forum, and you'l...

Re: kit cars - not eBay but is it really different!

Thanks, Colopwdfan, for your comments -- to which I feel compelled to reply. isn't the point of a website devoted to PWD to find out how to make cars run faster? I mean, the sites are up because of sites that sell AFTERMARKET parts MaxV, PE, etc. Actually, there were many sites devoted to PWDs long ...

Re: Who else has a pack that does this?

We have an accellerated version of this -- I call it Monster Junkyard Pinewood Racing. It is for the boys in my Boy Scout Troop, who are no longer elligible for the Cub races. I bring in a band saw, scroll saw, drill press, vice & drill, dremel and hand tools -- plus I have a table spread with a...

Re: kit cars - not eBay but is it really different!

Thank you Pinewoodwidow for your different perspective, always good to hear things from a different point of view. Let's be realistic though. Not every pack across the country offers build nights - I would say this is the exception rather than the rule. I know in our area we are the only pack amongs...

Re: How much time does it honestly take to build a PWD car..

I don't think I have ever spent less than 12 hours on a car -- but then, I tend to put as much (sometimes much more) effort into the "show" aspect as the "go." I have easily spent over 60 hours on one car, even knowing it would never win a race. Some cars are just for the fun of ...

$400 for a PWD car???

http://cgi.ebay.com/Pinewood-Derby-Car-ULTIMATE-DROP-TOP_W0QQitemZ6039470608QQcategoryZ1190QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I don't know if this is a record price or not, but it's the highest I've ever seen for a pre-built car. The final bid was $390.50, and with $7 for shipping and another $3 for insurance --...

Hail Odin! Welcome to the Forum! Amazing how complicated it is to get a little block of wood to roll straight and fast, isn't it? Good luck with it -- next year things will go MUCH more easily. Of course, as you can tell from reading this forum, the learning never ends. As for the best place to find...

Re: Pre-Cut Chaos -- a no-no for Show or Go?

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Our situation was made a little easier -- for NEXT year -- because we just received a memo from the District reiterating that pre-cuts will not be allowed to race. With this as backup, we have a rationale for taking a harder line. I have also purchased a complete se...

Pre-Cut Chaos -- a no-no for Show or Go?

I know this topic has come up in several threads -- but the dilema as to what to do about pre-cut cars reared its head again this year. ANd here I am referring to Pre-Cut car bodies only -- not "kit cars" using professionally-prepared axles, wheels and such. Although many vendors offer pre...

Re: What "1st place" means...

As I've mentioned before, our Pack's races are a bit... unusual. We hold individual den races over a two week period -- culminating in a Finals race of the top two racers from each den. This is a product of having a large Pack (up to 150 boys/17 dens), and the opportunity to keep the track up for ab...

Re: Old ,but cute Pinewood Movie

I really enjoyed this movie -- it was news to me too. It's a hoot.

Total fantasy -- but more real in many respects than "Down and Derby" -- and probably more laughs, even though it is only 14 minutes long.

Thanks for the heads up Baracuda!

Re: Cars winning two trophies

Like zeezop -- we use a "peer selection" method. We race each den individually (we have 16 dens!), and halfway through the heats we gather the boys and hand them each a slip of paper. They may vote for two cars -- one MAY be for their own car, but the second vote must be for a different ca...
