"If desired, you may change the wheelbase "
That is a change we do not allow @ any level of racing (Pack, District or Council).

Re: District race today!!!!
IMHO this is one of many examples of where elimination style scoring shows it superiority. We tried using computer tabulations and timed racing in the past with mixed results at best. Some would argue that "electronic" racing is better - and they are not without some merit - than eliminat...

Re: District race today!!!!
:D UPDATE : We got a call from a member of the district race committe and were told that there was a scoring error and that my cub had actually won 3rd place overall! He is thrilled. I thought he finished fourth overall, but they don't announce past third. Would have been nice to capture the award ...

Pinelife, what part of Ohio are you in? Those are some absurd rules.

Re: Weighing the cars ... safely
When the cars don't want to stay on the scales, we put a 1/2" dia. 3" long lag screw on the scale and zero the scale with this screw on it. Then we run the screw through the car to provide a "stability point" and then re-measure the car weight. Just kidding  :P :D :D

Re: Scales. Need advice
In addition to the CS200's certified 200.0g calibration weight, I supply our district races with a couple of 5.000 oz "confirmation" weight for "quick checks" before sending someone off to trim their car's weight down. And having a 5 oz. standard on hand also helps to quell all ...

Yep, that's the best and simplest way to handle it.nosam116 wrote:If the car doesn't clear the plastic check-in guide, then we take it to the track and let if run down once, if it's OK, then we pass it, if not, then the scout needs to work on making adjustments.

Re: We're heading to Districts
What's the purpose of impounding the cars.... it all seems a little ridiculous to me. Just inspect them again at the district race. Impounding the cars seems like it would just complicate things. Cars are "impounded" to help insure a sense of fairness and stability to the racing process. ...

Re: Down and Derby on DVD?
That's a good idea re: the Scouting Edition. Hopefully they can clean it up towards a "G" rating. Maybe a "director's cut" version could include a segment on the history of the Pinewood Derby done documentary style for the benefit of the kids (and kids at heart). Haven't seen it...

Re: To Race or Not To Race?
In Scouting, the District Cub Scout Leader Roundtable is an ideal place to make contacts to help bring about such joint solutions. You might ask the District Executive (who is usually present at such gatherings) to introduce you to the leaders of some larger nearby units. Of course, plan ahead ... ...

Re: To Race or Not To Race?
I'd rather see small units join forces to run their races... not necessarily to race against each other, but to have access to facilities. Also, they could piggyback with a larger, but not too distant, unit's derby. If they can actually race, it is better. I do know that their have been some units ...

Re: To Race or Not To Race?
Aha! But exactly what constitutes a "local derby?" It could have been part of one meeting during which time the cars are registered, inspected, and judged for design. Should there be more that want to race than "slightly restrictive" criteria would allow, then they could "d...

Re: To Race or Not To Race?
If we catch such things on registration night, then they must be fixed before the car can be registered. Otherwise, the car races as the registration staff accepted it, even if the problem is noticed later. So do your car usually get inspected one day and then raced on another? Yes, but IMHO that i...
