Re: Son took 1st in pack, thanks to this forum!
District is the same track (not just same model - the exact same track). Car is confiscated so no changes allowed, only to relube the axles. Yes a 50' track can be tough. Especially for kids that don't prepare their cars well enough. It is rough on kids when the cars don't get to the finish line. Bu...

Son took 1st in pack, thanks to this forum!
Thanks again to all who contributed their great ideas on the board. My son's car took 1st in the pack race. He ran a 50' alum track with his fastest heat at 3.96 seconds. He ran the track 8 times. His first four runs were a 3.97, 3.96, 4.01, 4.05. So the first two runs were fast and then the car got...

Re: Leveling the field or just plain ridiculous response?
Well the process above certainly levels the playing field, but it does so in a harmful manner. I guess for me it boils down to what are we trying to teach cub scouts. I would argue that the above process only teaches that someone is going to win with dumb luck. We all know that a good alignment with...

Doesn't it sound like his car would benefit from rail riding?

Re: Rail Riding question
Thank you Stan, was that to imply that it is better to leave the rear wheels just straight?

Re: Alignment Questions
Thanks for the tips. we are using the axle slots (not drilled holes). so i will need to pull the axles to get it right - ARGHHH additional questions. 1. i've heard that baking the block will remove the moisture out of the wood. i am concerned that if i bake the block then the axle slots would become...

Re: Alignment Questions
i've been reading about the shimming method for alignment, published by our very own Stan! I have a couple questions about the procedure. 1. how do you insert the shims? do you have to pull out the axles (nails) each time to insert the shim or is there a way of inserting it without removal of the ax...

Re: Alignment Questions
Stan, thank you kindly for the help. i did notice last year that every single car developed a serious wobble along its path down. is the theory that rail riding would eliminate that horrible wobble? Is there any other way to eliminate the wobble? what is a V tread? and lastly if the pack rules limit...

Alignment Questions
Well it's that time of year and I'm helping my son plan his car. We had a couple questions. 1. On a 54' aluminum track with a center rail, what is the best alignment: Straight or rail riding? 2. Are there any easy instructions for rail riding alignment? 3. Is camber helpful? I would think yes as it ...

styrofoam Cup for Sail
Has anyone here used a styrofoam cup for a sail? We are building a cat and if you cut the foam cup in half it appears to make a good sail. Any advice?

District race this past weekend
Thanks again to all who contributed their great ideas on the board. my son's car took 9th in the district race. I'm sure that's nothing to brag about, but the important thing was it was a great experience for us and we had a lot of fun (AND THAT IS WHAT COUNTS). This is his first year as a cub scout...
