Re: New Cubmobiles for Pack 505
No cars had Comtech wheels except ours, so Comtech's were undefeated also. One car (my son's) had the Comtech rubber seals pulled, the grease removed and bearings lubed with oil. This was the fastest car by about 0.1 sec ( P505 cars were 10.5 to 10.8 seconds over a 150 ft track if the driver went st...

New Cubmobiles for Pack 505
Pack 505 built 6 new cars over the summer to use in the Battlefield District Cubmobile Race that was held on August 22, 2009. The pictures are posted here: http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/gg24/rdlongsc/2009%20Cubmobile/ The cars are upgraded versions of the old "Battlefield design". You...

Pack 505 2008 Space Derby
Pack 505 held their Space Derby November 21, 2008. Thirty of our fifty Cubs brought their families in on a Friday night to stretch a bunch of rubber bands and have fun. Our Tiger Den Leader built us a new track this year based on the now famous Pack 80 design. It is a huge improvement from the track...

Re: Rudder placement on hydroplane design
Our pack also requires using all parts in the kit. Gluing the rudder flat on the top of the hull or bottom of the trampoline has become a favorite way of meeting this requirement, especially on the catamarans, which don't need it. It becomes a "decoration" .

Re: Brake issue's Related to steering
If you are going to a steering wheel instead of foot steering, use a foot operated brake. We had some cars this year use a fairly wide brake centered under the car. Applying the brake lowered a hinged rubber-edged board directly under the seat. The scout's weight was applied right over the brake-str...

Re: Wooden Dowels for Axles?
I do not think you really want to use wooden axles. Way too many scouts hit each other, curbs, hay bales, etc. Even if the wooden axle holds up to normal downhill race stresses, I think these are unlikely to survive a crash. Our district requires minimum 1/2" steel bolts or all-thread axles. Ou...

Bearings
There has been some discussion on this forum about the bearings supplied with Comtech2000 wheels not being as smooth or friction-free as the Boca bearings Sporty has found for the 10 and 12 inch steel wheels. I did some checking yesterday and found that the Comtech and steel wheels (from Farm and Fl...

Re: 2008 Battlefield District Cubmobile Race
The Cubs were very enthused about the timing system. They are used to seeing these at PWD events and "real" racing. They really liked this feature. I had a steady stream of boys coming by the timing tent to see how they did in their last run and comparing their buddies' times to theirs. Th...

2008 Battlefield District Cubmobile Race
The Battlefield District of the Heart of Virginia Council held its first race in years (I think 2002 was the last) this past weekend. All the Cubs had a great time and a new batch of leaders and parents are getting the hang of organizing this event again. I have posted pictures of the event on Photo...

Re: Day Camp - Space Derby vs. Rain Gutter Regatta
I would go with the raingutter regatta. This kit is easier for a Cub to assemble with minimal help. We are doing this activity this year for all the Webelos at our Day Camp. I would either make catamarans or leave the hulls just like they come from the box. (Catamarans NEVER lose to monohulls in thi...

Re: Coordinator Racing in the event?
I am assuming you are a parent in this unit. If you are, you should not be prevented from participating because you are willing to volunteer. You can isolate yourself from this by getting other volunteers (we use Den Chiefs, who have no allegiance to any Cub) to handle the cars and non-Scouter paren...

Solid Axles
I have been thinking of making wooden axles with a solid 0.5" rod by routing a 0.5" diameter groove into two 28" 1 x 4 and then gluing the three pieces together. I would use epoxy in the groove to bond wood to steel and TiteBond III to glue the top and bottom wood pieces together. If ...
