Re: Racemaster Starting Switch
Interesting update and a bit of confusion on my part:) I installed a magnetic switch on the starting gate. I did this on the front of the angle iron that holds the pins for the start gate. The sensors are together when the starting gate is in the ready position and the magnet swings away when the st...

Re: Racemaster Starting Switch
Thanks for the thoughts. I won't have an opportunity to test the setup until the night before our race so I am contemplating wiring up a new switch and have a magnetic switch set up too. Then wiring connectors to each so I can swap back and forth in a couple of seconds to do some testing.

Racemaster Starting Switch
We are preparing for our Awana race later this month and I have been contemplating revising the start switch on our RacemasterIV timer/Besttrack. We are using the switch that came with the timer. I suspect but can't prove, that the original start switch can cause times to vary slightly due to the sm...

Re: RaceMaster IV Communication Issues
Thanks for the advice. I did not realize the help section had so much info! I was able to do the paper clip test and it showed everything was functioning as it should. I then hooked the timer back up again just to double check my results from the previous night. After a few seconds, the software rec...

RaceMaster IV Communication Issues
Hello all, I am hoping to pick your brains  We are hoping to hold an Awana race this year for the first time in a couple of years. We are using a RaceMaster IV timer and have been using GrandPrix Race Manager V10.0. Last night I tested the setup on two different computers and neither would...

Re: How much can they do
Any thoughts from those of you who have experience building cars with kids this age? MaxV's pamphlet includes an excellent summary of age-appropriate building activity. It originates from Randy Worcester of "The Ultimate Pinewood Derby Site" fame ( now defunct ). There are related topics ...

How much can they do
Our church has been running an Awana Grand Prix for the last five years but for me this year will be different because my son will be racing for the first time. This is his first year in Cubbies and will turn 4 in April. With this being his first year racing his own car my question becomes, how much...

Re: How to determine proper age group
Thanks for the thoughts. At this point an open class really is not an option. We do a separate adult race a moth before the kids race so we can get the kids excited about their race. The kids race is this Sunday and I was just informed of this today. Two options immediately come to mind: 1. Assign i...

How to determine proper age group
I need some wisdom and advice from you guys on how to handle a grouping. :scratching: This year for our Awanan Race, we will be running 3 age groups of cars. We give the awards for speed and design out by age range. We have one family this year that decided to only build one car but they have three ...

Re: What is most challenging PWD project you have yet to sta
I have built a few cars that were hollow inside but shaped on the outside. This year I built a version of Lightning McQueen using the technique. I start off by doing all the shaping and getting the car to final form. Then I cut a thin slice off the top and bottom, cut out the interior with a scroll ...

Re: Our Council Rules - Pretty Loose?
10.The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices Wording things this way can be dangerous. I built a fan powered car a couple of years ago that met all of the size and weight measurements that technically could be considered legal. It was free wheeling, although I could see how a fan could...

Re: Weight distribution
All good thoughts. When I started weighing this thing I had visions of it popping a wheely at the transition  I don't have too high of hopes for speed on this thing since it is more about the design, although I won't complain if it is too fast. I am not sure if I will have time to test and...

Re: Weight distribution
Yes the com I measured was after the lead was added.
Moving the wheels is not an option. I just measured and the back is moved just under 1/2 inch forward.

Re: Weight distribution
Had a bit more time to play around with it tonight. Car without any lead weighs 3.2 oz. With this I have 1.35 oz on the front and 1.8 oz rear. With lead added as far back as possible to bring it to 5 oz I measure 1.25 oz on the front and 3.75 rear. This means that I am actually counter balancing the...

Weight distribution
Looking for a bit of advice on weight distribution. This year was the first year that my son has been old enough to race/"help" build a car for our Awana race. Most of his help has been watching me as I use tools and me talking with him about how to be safe around them (he is only 2 1/2 bu...
