Re: drathbun and son race results for 2013 Pack derby

My son's car placed 5th in our district race this weekend. We used our pack track, and a really fast time from our pack is about 2.27. The overall district winner smoked everyone, even the outlaw (aka parent) cars, with a 2.20 flat. The only car that ran faster on the day was my ducted-fan car, whic...

Re: drathbun and son race results for 2013 Pack derby

I can tell you that the purple car this year came in behind another slim wedge that I built last year that had a higher proportion of weight in front of the axle. We have a track with a very smooth curve (rather than an abrupt transition) which I believe I read means that more aggressive weight plac...

Re: Physics and the Pinewood Derby DVD Giveaway (2013)

Oh believe me, I completely understand. :) From the marketing perspective FB does offer a number of advantages. It's just that there are various issues about their service (privacy issues for one) that have made me decide not to sign up. On that front, it's frustrating for an end user because so man...

Re: drathbun and son race results for 2013 Pack derby

The purple ghost flames car was mentioned here and the purple paint used in my outlaw car this year was another transparent paint like I used (green) here . The transparent paints are designed to be painted over silver, and from my experience (I have used red, blue, green, and now purple) they come ...

Re: drathbun and son race results for 2013 Pack derby

Really like the color on the purple. Nice effect with the three coats! Thanks! You did some ghost flames like that once right? Similar, yes. I used a metalic purple over a regular purple. The flames on that car were a lot more work! This was more of a rush job. Thanks for answering my questions and...

Just my opinion, but there should be a way to be eligible for stuff like this without being forced to join FarceBook...

Im not sure what you were using in the past for graphite. Whatever I got at Wally World. :) Max-v That's what we used this time. Now, Thanks for mentioning my name as a idea based style of car. I roughly used the concepts mentioned here . I would be curious to know what your bore prep method is, Do...

Re: drathbun and son race results for 2013 Pack derby

Texas Car - First in Webelos I, First in Pack, and winner of the "Lone Star" Design trophy. We used the slots. Weight was flat tungsten applied in front of and behind the rear axle. I think it was around 2 ounces in front and one ounce behind the axle. Even though we used the slots I drill...

drathbun and son race results for 2013 Pack derby

We had our derby yesterday. This year, unfortunately, we did not have much time to work on cars. My son (Web II) started his last Saturday during our pack workshop hosted at my house. He designed and we cut out a wavy pattern. He didn't decide how he wanted to paint it until about Tuesday, at which ...

Re: Fun project

I worked on something like this last year but never raced it. Instead of trying to drill, I used the "band saw box" approach to remove the middle. The resulting car was slightly smaller than a full block, but you would have to stack it next to a full-sized block to be able to tell. It took...

Re: Band saw blade poll

I would recommend reading the instructions very carefully in setting the blade guides on the band saw. I second this. Once you get everything set, it should last quite a while. But it's definitely worth taking the several hours to tweak everything and get the blade tracking just right. And yes, I s...
