Re: Aerodynamics ?

Our "before you cut that block" emphasis is related to alignment (friction), not aerodynamics. We make sure that the kids press their axle holes before they cut the block, so all the sides of the block are still square. We saw a huge improvement in the overall performance of the cars in o...

Re: Aerodynamics ?

Your not wrong that its important in the context you meant it. but just saying aerodynamics implies nothing relating to weight placement. choose words and contexts carefully. In the end I disagree that it is THE most important in your context. If I had the time, I would of liked to build a straight ...

Re: Why trailing fenders work

Does a racer even get up to a speed where this is a real issue? Typically the answer to this will depend on how good the rest of your build is. More important things come first. alignment, weight placement, wheel prep, etc. Once one gets those things near perfect, the aero factor should be consider...

Re: Lightnin's Simple Alignment Test

This is a great method to help understand alignments. Wish I had it when I was first learning. could have saved me a few hours of frustration and sleepless nights right before a race or two. Digging a little deeper into alignments. It should be noted that this makes some assumption of how high the n...

Re: Question Regarding Static Electricity

Your issue is not uncommon but not really an issue at all...just means you've done a good job polishing your axles for when your lube has been depleted from racing. Search for lemon pledge and how to use it.

Re: Confirmation of Rail Riding setup

only straight on the on the rear axles. DFW is bent. I actually drill DFW a little canted too and bend the axle. Makes adjusting the drift a little less sensitive. I didn't realize you were that far into the build. as long as the rear wheels migrate out to nail head rolling forward and backward, you...

Re: Confirmation of Rail Riding setup

If possible try to avoid bending axles. drill at your desired angle. Not always practical given one's tool availability or creativity and determination in setting up tools...but straight axles are faster than bent ones. And if you do mess up on the drill job you can always still bend the axles but b...

Probably just becuase that's what they found to be faster with their type of builds through testing.

Re: Oil vs graphite

I learn something new every time I read Derbytalk. I have heard Krytox evaporates after a short period of time. Is that true? No. Oil does not evaporate unless its heated pretty high. How high probably depends on the type of oil. I switched to oil a few years ago and I test each new years car again...

Re: Awana cars 2015

They are puma inspired but custom made for awana wheels, but double as air deflectors ;) Not sure how serious it is but it's something my boys and I really enjoy while they learn what makes a fast car and how to use paint, sand, drill, etc. My son has a fascination with gold...so the million design ...

Awana cars 2015

I don't get on here as much as I used to (kids schedules are crazy busy) but still like check in on occasion... Thought I'd share this year's Awana builds that placed 1st and 2nd out of about 87 cars. Older brother squeaked out the win due to younger brother's inexperience at staging a precision rac...

free floating boat design

This is not a Raingutter Regatta project but... My son wants to build a boat for a friendly race among classmates. The rules are rather loose, but the basic intent is free floating no metal, plastic, glue, screws, nails, etc. the boat will be powered by the flow of water only in a small creek. Must ...
