Re: Pack Race's With someone else time add on
Scoremaker, You have a great pack there!!! You realized a mistake but are more interested in making sure the problem is avoided next year rather than raising heck this year. A Pack Master that readily admits a mistake and seems interested in fixing it next year. A mom who notices something wrong and...

You know . . . I think the physics teacher is on the right track. Too bad we don't know where he teaches. I sure some of his students come from science deprived families and that several of them will feel really bad if they get a cruddy grade. Perhaps we should ask him for a student list. I would ha...

Re: Correct COG Placement
I've found that when I get about 1 ounce on the front axle, the COM is about an inch or so infront of the rear axle - using the stock axle slots. This year the family had three cars racing. My son raced in the Webelos and me and the fiance (now wife - great day -- districts in the morning, wedding i...

Re: Wheel balancer
WW has an interesting idea. There is no need to use a pinewood derby car to test a single variable. The changing of the one item would have the tendency to mess with the other things (alignment comes to mind). A "test" car could be used to test wheels (by using the screw on axles WW talks ...

Re: Yearly Budget
Pinewood Daddy,
You forgot to divide by the number of racers. That makes it so much more reasonable.
TDean,
You forgot to list Band-Aids!

Best Combination of Wheel/Axle
If you could race any of the axle/wheels out there (BSA, Awana, Pinecar, Pine-Pro etc) what combination do you think is superior to the others? (I notice that WIRL allows any of these stock wheels to race in stock class).

Re: Parent/Son Involvement
This is an interesting topic. My son just wrapped up his last derby and I can say that every year he's done more and more of the work on his own. He's learned that although sanding up to 400 grit on wood can be a chore it leads to a really nice finish on the car. Although I still do some of the work...

Re: The "Thrill" of the Race
We just finished our Pack race this past weekend using the total time method. This will have been the third pack race I have seen using this as well as the district race we ran last year. While there are pros and cons about whether one method or another picks the "fastest" car, I believe o...

Re: Inexpensive Trophies
Just wanted to update y'all. This year our Pack decided to try aaatrophies.com (or it could be aaatrophy.com). We were blown away. Free shipping and a discount based on the size of our order. Received the same week order placed. Free engraving. They looked fantastic. We also saved about 30% over wha...

Re: The Ultimate Speed Trick
Last year, my fiance kinda watched me and my son work on his car and she attended our Pack race. In building a car for our district race she took a little more interest in watching. This year she is building her own car to race in the Pack's open class. And get this . . . . she agreed to move the ti...

Randy,
I think your idea is excellent. I also spent quite a bit of time just cruising this forum before there was a thread where I just had to post and then I joined. Glad I did!

Re: Talked at roundtable last night...
We run a total time format at our Pack and districts (our Pack ran the districts this year). The computer program takes the time of each racer in the first heat and then lines them up for the second heat according to time. Thus the three fastest cars from the first heat will run head to head (the pr...

Wow. That seller sure is getting defensive. Yes, I have some of the tools and yes I've taught my son to use them. He deburred his first axle at 8 (we had just joined Cub Scouts then). I showed him how to put the axle in the drill and using progressively finer sandpaper and then polish to get them sm...

Just remember to check if the paper you are looking at is FEPA or CAMI. You may actually be taking a step backward if you mix the two without checking.
