First Space Derby! 2014

Our pack competes at Den level with each Den making one rocket. We also combine raingutter regatta into the same pack meeting. They are seen as fun events vs competing for trophies etc. I had our Den sanding on that big block of balsa for our entire den meeting. One scout designed the fins- two flam...

Re: Wheels

Curiosity really. Thought it might help alignement to have similar shaped wheels. The wheels told me where the "heavy side" was by rolling or not rolling. If they didn't roll, I rotated them until they did. With the AWANA wheels, it really showed defects in the treads due to the sprue mark...

Wheels

So I now have a small collection of BSA wheels and I was curious how they compared to each other. So I sat down and let them roll across a flat, level board that was 3ft long. I put each wheel in the same place on the board and let go, letting the imbalance of the wheel's weight start it rolling. Ea...

Re: Prepping for district

Well we raced in a building where there was a fair amount of dust in the air. Also the car went from warm house, to very cold car etc. So I figured if anything there might have been some condensation and at the very least dust particles that need to come out. I like your time for retouching, think I...

Prepping for district

Ok so our Scout is headed to district in just over 1 month. I see notes a about blowing out the old graphite and replacing with new due to moisture absorption. My question is in regards to timing. When should I blow out the old, and when to add the new?

Re: Our 2013 Lineup

Thanks! The cupcake car got dropped by the car handler after the second run but thanks to the canned foam cupcakes, the blow was cushioned!

Re: Swiss Army Knife Car

That is an awesome car knife. I wonder how that falls with "no moving parts" rules? I'd just consider those "movable parts" and not an issue provided they requrie a bit of effort to move. Guess you could throw in a locking pin if you absolutely had to. That'd be hilarious to have...

Re: Our 2013 Lineup

Sounds like a sweep! Congrats. Love all the cars Seth Thanks! Yes a family sweep! To all those "tan shirts" and adults out there who purposefully don't polish their own axles or make sure their own cars have weights, that's a safe place to be. Two of my kids beat me despite my best effort...

Re: Our 2013 Lineup

 Will we get a copy of that explanation here at DT? ;) Looks like your kids got what they asked for. Those cupcakes look good enough to eat... but I don't care for lead filling, prefer icing. No one else in the pack ran extended wheel base. Our district rules specifically state that the orig ...

Best moments

Thinking over the Pack PWD there were a couple of moments that really stood out- 1. My son and youngest daughter's cars were on the track together- lanes 3 and 4, they were neck and neck down to the wire.. their times were only 2 thousandths of a second apart! 2. The first run of my older daughter's...

Definitely advice worth heeding! Luckily was able to correct with baking soda and superglue!

Our 2013 Lineup

Here's our 2013 lineup! Here's how the design decisions came in from the kids: Dad, I want to make a police car, Dad, I want a fast car that looks like this (waves hand in an arc), Dad, I want to make a platter of cupcakes. Ok.... wait what? I give you, the Police Car!. the Swhoosh car! my Flaming A...

Drilling Disaster

My #44 drill bit is now prominently painted red at the base.

Apparently I own another slightly larger black bit! I did not enjoy finding this out after I drilled out the axle slots on a couple of finished cars!

Lesson learned the hard way!

This was great information. Thank you. I've heard discussions in our pack about doing one of these this year. Sure hope I get to put this info to use!

Re: I want to build a track....

So with the changes you are suggesting, that's not a $50 purchase anymore. You should walk away and send me his number. :-) seriously though, if you race on aluminum, your test results might not be valid.
