Re: Getting more Scout Races to support oil as a legal lubricant
Four Peaks / Thunderbird Districts in Grand Canyon Council (Arizona) started allowing oil a couple years ago. Current rules: http://www.richardcmoeur.com/scout/2018 ... es2018.pdf

Re: ThunderPeaks Pinewood Derby Car Photos
This year, I was directly involved with only two of the cars (mine and my son's - both from previous years in a category permitting older cars). I held workshops for my son's old Pack in prior years, but not this year, but it looks like they haven't forgotten everything. :) My co-chair occasionally ...

Re: ThunderPeaks Pinewood Derby Car Photos
Never been raised as an issue. No photos of the actual boys or PII, other than the Pack number (which really doesn't narrow things down much). Conversely, the advantage of assigning names to car photos is the boy has his name attached to his creation, (hopefully) creating pride of ownership.

ThunderPeaks Pinewood Derby Car Photos
The 2017 ThunderPeaks Pinewood Derby (the District-level event for Four Peaks and Thunderbird Districts of Grand Canyon Council) was held on April 22. As part of the registration process, we take photos of each car (4 of each car - front left, front right, rear left, rear right). I've finally wrangl...

Re: Opinions of the group
Last Saturday was our ThunderPeaks Pinewood Derby (District-level race for Four Peaks and Thunderbird Districts of Grand Canyon Council). The event went extremely well, with greatly increased turnout from Cub Scouts, a robust Open Class, and lots of fun. However, Bob Weaver, our chief inspector, was...

Re: Opinions of the group
Many of the issues raised here are why I'm keeping the job of District Pinewood Derby co-chair, even though my son has now been in a Troop for over a year. My son's Tiger year, I witnessed a number of "lively dialogues" regarding parental interpretation of ambiguous rules at the District r...

Correction: a frame-by-frame analysis shows yaw beginning around halfway into the vertical curve.

Re: Pack 242 Cars - 2016
Looking at the video (and from my recollection), the car was fine until it reached the level segment at the end of the vertical curve (track is a 32' {27.7' start to finish} Piantedosi.) That's when something imposes a bit of up force on the car nose, and the dance begins. As I mentioned above, ther...

Re: Shop ideas
At our workshops, we post large pieces of paper with all the car-building steps displayed. Really helps everyone (including those who have built a car or dozen).

Re: Pack 242 Cars - 2016
One more thing: several of the cars combined rear weighting with forward-placed wheels, and the resulting CG barely ahead of the rear axle made for some... memorable racing. One more-extreme example, caught on video: http://www.richardcmoeur.com/scout/2016/pwd242/wobblycar.mov ( QuickTime .mov...

Pack 242 Cars - 2016
I've uploaded all the car photos we took at last Saturday's Pack 242 Pinewood Derby and placed them on a webpage at: http://www.richardcmoeur.com/242pwd2016.html We take four photos of each car: front left, front right, rear left, rear right. This way the boy and family has a record of the car (and ...

Re: Arrow of Light Rank
A fall Arrow of Light ceremony would not have worked for our Pack, as we added 6 new fifth-graders this fall (two as late as late September). Due to the number of new-to-Scouting boys, we scheduled an early April ceremony, which should give the boys enough time to bond with their Troop prior to summ...

Re: Arrow of Light Rank
As a Den Leader of 5th graders, we're now referring to the rank on an everyday basis as "Arrow of Light", with "Webelos 2" used as needed for explanation. In our Pack, the first-year Webelos are now just referred to as "Webelos". Speaking with other Packs in our Distric...
