Re: New track too long?
Thanks guys.....now knowing that the Freedom come in 8' sections and BestTrack comes is 7' sections answers the question I had. So I guess we "overkilled it" by ordering that extra 8' section............it was interesting to see how the places were affected in our pack race making the cars...

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much
Whoops! Ran into this almost concurrent post along similar lines. http://www.derbytalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7105&start=30 Again, sorry if a forum "faux pax". Stan's topic above is a little different than this one, which is more to the "sweet-spot" of polishing for grap...

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much
Stan, cool write-up. Have printed to include in "the notebook".
What pictures? Is that to see if you have your "smoothest" starting point before "roughing them up"?

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much
wow! Sounds great
Good thinking on the "smoother-to-rougher" direction for bore integrity. Won't that still be a question as the axle "gets rougher"?
Thanks Stan!

Re: New track too long?
Chiming in here with FPL since I erroneously conveyed "50 feet" earlier. It is a Freedom Series. 48 ft. And, BTW, seems like everyone talks about a 42' length, so I am confused. :? And another correction (maybe related to my confusion): Our district race was the same track, just one less s...

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much
Correction: it is a 48' 'Freedom Series'.....not 50' as previously stated. Stan: were you able (or intend) to apply graphite at each of the grit steps? This is what we would like to determine. Without any science or testing to start off with, does the notion of "less polished surfaces" act...

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much
Well, we are in a position to set the track up for an extended period of time and do some testing. It's a new MW Freedom Aluminum with a K2 timer. We bought an extra 8' section so that would be a "50 foot" track (i measured 46.5' with a soft tape, pin-to-FL).......For perspective, our top ...

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much
FWIW, 600 Grit (US) is about 15 micron, same as Micromesh MX 240. I think that 15 micron is a good stepping stone toward 2 microns, all using Micromesh: 30 micron: MX 180 15 micron: MX 240 8 micron: MX 400 4 micron: MX 800 2 micron: 12000 Thanks Stan! I recognize most of those grits/back# from an o...

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much
Can an axle be TOO polished? If it helps, that was also discussed briefly in this old topic . BUT! The run times were pretty danged good! Better than a finer polish? Have you tried a controlled experiment in " unpolishing "? FS, if you mean have we tried prepping various "polish grad...

Re: Less is More? Polishing Too Much?
sporty......didn't know how to point to previous post. But thanks for getting me down to 1 micron. I still wonder about the "grabby" nature of anything more "rough". I was looking at: http://www.fastpinewoodderbytips.com/pinewood-derby-axles/embedding-graphite-into-pinewood-derby...
