Re: Rail rider question

Here are our 4 laps in the District race Saturday. We start in the near lane, moving over each lap. Anyone know what track this is?

Re: Rail rider question

Thank you! We hydro dipped the car. Basically we spray a base color (automotive paint), the dip the car into pattern of choice, then clear it. It was the easiest way I knew to get a cool looking finish on the car. My son has had me do this for him on each of his two cars. He picks the design and co...

Re: Rail rider question

That skull image is from the hydro dip? Or did you add that afterwards? It is part of the hydro dip, actually the film that I dip the painted piece into. Its a zombie pattern that my son thinks is the coolest thing ever. He got the idea from a machete that I did a couple years back. We just changed...

Re: Rail rider question

Congrats, team wd13! I love that marble block look on the body. Is that a vinyl wrap, or is it paint? Thank you! We hydro dipped the car. Basically we spray a base color (automotive paint), the dip the car into pattern of choice, then clear it. It was the easiest way I knew to get a cool looking fi...

Re: Rail rider question

Races ran Saturday. My sons car took 1st place for all of the Wolf pack. It then took 2nd place overall in the District race. We were very happy with that. We're still going to look for some more speed next year to see if we can win the whole thing. There are a couple areas I know we can improve upo...

Re: Rail rider question

Wanted to come here and update this. We were able to get the car cut out, axles and wheels ready etc. Car weight is a little heavier than I was hoping, comes in at 1.2oz with axles and wheels. However, its the design my son came up with and wanted so I wasn't about to tell him no. Thanks to your hel...

Re: Rail rider question

Sporty and wd13, the last message I got through Derby Talk did not show up in my email like it used too. When I clicked on Derby Talk, it did show up as "1 New Message". Since wd13 is new to Derby Talk, he might have missed seeing the notice that he had a message. I checked that after he ...

Re: Rail rider question

Wd13, Try getting a wooden yard stick and gluing it to a 4 foot shelf board to test your rail riding. It's what I do. Also are you going thinner than last year? 0.5 oz of wood 0.5 oz wheels and axels and 4 oz of tungston? I like the 5/8th CoM. Good luck. Noskills Yes, we are planning to thin the ca...

Re: Rail rider question

What you're saying makes perfect sense and I'm confident we will be able to figure it out now that I have something to go on. Its always scary jumping into this without advice from someone who has done it. With no way to actually test myself, the last thing I want to do is try something blindly and...

Re: Rail rider question

no toe on the rear wheels. there our different ways to get that 1 degree cant on the rears. I prefer drilling the cant, over bent axles in the rear. The rail riding four on the floor, if we took a example of drift of 3 inchs at 4 feet. I want the DFW to drift about 2inch in 4 feet by itself. I want...

Re: Rail rider question

How are you attaching axles? Drilling holes or using slots? I assume with extended wheel base they're letting you drill your own. If drilling what jig are you using? Depending on the one used there is a solution to get a 1* hole drilled. If just using the slot you should be able to bias the rear ax...

Re: Rail rider question

Thanks for the info guys, very informative. Sportys instruction makes perfect sense but leaves a few details fuzzy. I get the toe in on the dominate front wheel and toe out on the non dominate wheel. However, for the rear wheels, I want a slight toe out on the wheel behind the dominate front or just...

Rail rider question

Hello, I'm new here and fairly new to the pinewood derby aswell. This will be my son and I's second year doing the derby. Last year we had some success placing 1st in his den/pack, and 3rd in district (119 cars). My son and I were pretty happy with that especially since neither of us had ever built ...
