Re: 2020 Belly Tank Racer, my entry for Outlaw Class
Speedster, The car is overall an inch longer, since we do not have as stringent dimensional requirements for outlaws. Most of the weight is in the added read section with the COB about 1/4" behind the rear axle. I actually had to add a touch of weight up in the nose of the car to keep it nose d...

Re: 2020 Train Car for my 3 year old.
I used a small flashlight/laser pointer that runs on batteries inside the hole for the headlight. We will turn it on right before the race.

2020 Belly Tank Racer, my entry for Outlaw Class
Our leaders/adults outlaw class runs modified rules. Here's my build for this year, based on the old salt flat belly tank racers. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gFOvVqBJSJWxjRUWTkcIUcO62zhWy74d3fs5VcjpOLx20_x4D_8LKBfvaRwl9Vr0P5BLdGtEQ6oTDvNF9NdQpk-4_8NIyiaEr8rZF-68oD9Tl9XgsrG0nJd3fc40ET3ErTIpDjXu...

2020 Train Car for my 3 year old.
My second to youngest LOVES trains and is old enough to compete for siblings class this year. When asked what he wanted to do he enthusiastically responded with a TRAIN! Here's what I came up with. Only three wheels actually will touch the track and yes, the headlight will light up during the race. ...

Re: First real derby race... wheel advice
Car body doesn't matter. Get the weight right and focus effort on wheels and axles. If your axles are polished and smooth, your wheels are true and straight, and you weigh in at 5.0 with you COG correct, you will do fine. Perfect wheels, axles, and weight on a square block of wood can still win the ...

Re: First real derby race... wheel advice
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwWejEdiyYk I've got a video series on YouTube that shows how we do wheels and axles, it's a good palace to start. There's lots of videos and tutorials out there, and DT is a great resource. Above all, remember that this is supposed to be something fun you do with yo...

I've got a video series on YouTube that will walk you through some of the wheel and axle prep with links to everything you could possibly need. It will get you started in the right direction.

Here's video of the Spitfire Mark III in the first trial run. Best time of the day after graphite and adjustments was a 2.5048, enough to win the outlaw class for our pack.

Re: 2018 Spitfire Mark III
Wow! That's a really nice design. I don't think it would fit our track (the rear wheel would probably drop into the slot for the start gate), but it's still gorgeous! We run on a best track and I made the rear wheel wide enough to ride over the slot thanks to the heads up of some of the guys here.

Re: Excellent Pinewood Derby Youtube Series
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=XwWejEdiyYk I have heard from many of our parents that they struggled with knowing how and what to do, or thought that they needed to purchase a ton of expensive tools. I guess great minds think alike because I shot a video series this year to shar...

Volunteer Thanks
I'm trying something new this year, and wondered what other packs/groups do to say thank you to everyone who volunteers to help put on your races? I'm making wooden challenge coins to give to each adult that helps put on our race, be it in the pits, tabulation, check in, etc. I recently purchased a ...

Re: Advise me on using slots. :)
I wouldn't advise anybody to build a RR car without a tuning board, and that's another thing he'd have to purchase parts for, etc. :) Not if your like Sporty and use a smooth kitchen floor! Re: 2018 Spitfire Mark III
And build back plate that matches your fender design! Kind of like an air shield behind the fender! Whoda, My thoughts on the fenders are that they may be a "for show" element only. I thought about building out something around a "weighted" air shield that would attach only via ...

Re: 2018 Spitfire Mark III
Finished up the Spitfire, the track clearance is going to necessitate riding in the "raised" position so no fenders it is. Really happy with the final paint, i did buff and wax it a bit after pics were taken to get rid of some fingerprints and a few small blemish spots. It's shiny as a new...

Re: 2018 Spitfire Mark III
So in considering how I wanted to finish out this car I really wanted to make it look like an old dirt track racer. Kind of a nod to the old belly tank dry-lake mod cars and make it look like something that a guy might have built in his garage post WWII out of an old spitfire airplane. I really want...
