Re: $5,000 Pinewood Derby Showdown Coming To Wisconsin

Keep in mind that last year, this wasn't an issue. Same rules. Yes, it is possible to find copies of the 2023 rules online and that same rule is there. If I had read that rule, I might have interpreted it less strictly to intend that "the car must accommodate the width of the guide rail." If you ...

Re: $5,000 Pinewood Derby Showdown Coming To Wisconsin

The front wasn't 1.75" between the axles on all 3 cars. Presuming this rule was the culprit? "Do Not Alter The Width Of The Car At The Axles" Yes, that is what they said. But altered from what? They said a stock block, which is nowhere in the rules. They also have a track clearance rule of 1⅝. This ...

Re: $5,000 Pinewood Derby Showdown Coming To Wisconsin

Not good. Unfortunately, we got dq'd in tech. So, no racing for us. We could have raced for fun, but be ineligible for the prize money. My kids were pretty upset, so we left. Big bummer. We're hoping for a little better results than last year, even though we did quite well. So... how'd it go this year? :eager: Not good. Unfortunately, we got dq'd in tech. So, no racing for us. Re: $5,000 Pinewood Derby Showdown Coming To Wisconsin

Seems that the registration deadline has already past. If you are in the neighborhood, it might be fun to stop in and see the action. What fun! The rules no longer seem to be posted at that site (probably due to the registration deadline having passed), but this looks to be a copy of the 2024 rules ...

Re: Cheaper alternative than liquid glass

Make sure the synthetic wax is both hydrophobic (repels water) and oleophobic (repels oil), as I have seen they almost always indicate that they are hydrophobic, but only a few state that they are also oleophobic. Do you know of a specific brand that is oleophobic? Some treatment products I've seen ...

Re: D-1 oil formula

I'm not an expert on oils, but I would venture that Buckeye Brew Extreme Oil (BB Extreme) is one of those "D-1-like" vendor offerings, based on its description and reputation : BBE is not like D-1. BBE is a great oil, but you don't want to put very much on. I would say that X-1 is much closer to D ...

Re: Mulling a track build...

Hey VK,
I watched this guy's series on building a pwd track and found it entertaining. Perhaps it could help with different ideas. He even does a timer.

Re: Finalizing my car - 3 questions for the PWD masters

A couple of things. I'm curious as well about the wheels. VK's spot on with the analysis on modified wheels. Way easier to make them slower by doing the wrong thing inadvertently. The wheel sealant is a variable for me as well, as I've never used it. You may want to try a proven sealant to eliminate ...

Re: Post-Race Feedback, please!

I am curious how others cut the notch / recess / inset into the body to accommodate the offset of the dominant front wheel (DFW). In our racing heydays we pretty much just shaved off the entire body by ~1/16" from the front until just past the back of the wheel ( here's a body so cut from Vitamin K ...

...we like an adaption of Sporty's rather straightforward "no front wheels" alignment method ... using a thumbtack to elevate the front of the body into its racing configuration. I see that during our extended derby hiatus that LightninBoy's method refined the "no front wheels" approach a bit ...
