Science Fair
I'm working with first year Webelos (4th grade boys). Their school science fair is Feb 24th. The SF committee has done a poor job of getting information and details out. As such, I suspect that none of my Scouts have started their projects. I'm going to offer to help the Scouts with their projects b...

Re: Cars running consecutive races w/ Perfect-n
I will say that the sorting method used in GPDM works very well (I'm guessing that's your algorithm). I've looked at s few schedules for 6 lanes. Many of them have patterns like consecutive races always in certain lanes. When you know the pattern, it makes sorting for the next race a bit easier. And...

Cars running consecutive races w/ Perfect-n
We have a 6 lane track and use Perfect-n scheduling. We typically have 6-12 cars in each rank. The time between heats is rather long because we have to wait for cars to be returned to the staging table to be sorted. Obviously the time would be greatly reduced if the next heat cars were ready right a...

Re: multiple lane "shutoff" for GPRM
TWICE down 4 lanes is 8 races / 8 to 64 points possible / a (potential?) reduction in the number of ties amongst points and adding more racing in a (relatively) reasonable amount of extra event time. Assuming the the number of cars is greater than or equal to the number of lanes, this will double t...

Re: Keeping the drama out of the derby.
We just had one of our best Derbies yet. One of the biggest improvements was our software and more specifically, the race data presentation. We hold the derby in the school and have access to an overhead projector. I hooked my laptop up to it and was able to have the current heat and standings on it...

Re: What's the plan for timer failure?
I don't know of another track in the area with a digital timer. There might be a track in the neighboring Council but I haven't seen it.
I like Stan's idea to drop down to three lanes and run a triple or quad elimination schedule. I guess I need to prepare for this pretty soon.

Re: Our track, districts and our boys using it
I don't know the exact history of our track but we have provided out track at least 5 of the last 10 years for Districts. We haven't offered it up to District bound racers. Prior to last year, I don't remember there being a Carb Night. There isn't an expectation of us getting the track out for testi...

Re: Our track, districts and our boys using it
We will considering a Carburation Day at the hobby shop next year, maybe the Saturday prior to the event. Again we would disable the gate and not use the timer.

What's the plan for timer failure?
I've got back up plans for few different scenarios of failure. However, I really don't know what we would do if the timer failed. I suppose we could use a video camera at the finish line and look at replays.
Anyone thought this one through and got a plan?

Re: Our track, districts and our boys using it
I don't have any intentions to open up testing for other Packs. I was hoping to get the track out the attic and set it up right in the hallway under the scuttle hole and let our Scouts test there. Its a lot of work just doing this. It's a heck of a lot of work to get the track to an ADA compliant lo...

Our track, districts and our boys using it
Our Pack has a 6 lane aluminum track with a digital timer and compatible software. The track is well designed with a lot of after market upgrades. Our track was used at district last year. After the race, the hobby shop that hosted the race, Council and the Pack committed to the next two years. Last...

Re: Great Goofs
Last year I decide to keep things simple, I went with the classic wedge. I mortised two cavities, one for pouring lead and one for adding weight at weigh in. I poured lead and hit 4.95 ounces just perfect. Then I put the wheels on... If you can believe it, wheels and axles weigh more than .05 ounces...
