Re: New Piantedosi Stop Section
The new stop section work great but some of our faster cars made it pass the end of the stop section. I think with any of these commercial stop sections you need a final measure to ensure that fastest cars do not go off the end of the track. We put a wadded up sheet at the end. A jacket or pillow w...

GPRM works with the K2 timer with no mofifications. The start gate microswitch communicates with the K2 finish line via a simple RJ type phone line (supplied with the K2). The finish line communicates to your PC via a supplied RS232 serial cable. You just need GPRM installed on the computer and a se...

Re: Nyoil presence
What about the cars that leave behind graphite, glitter, or feathers? What about the cars with sticky paint? What about other messy cars? If messy cars are the problem, then have a rule about messy cars. That is in our rules. No wet paint, no excess lube, etc. If it can cause a mess, it is sent to ...

Re: Post your jigs and other time saving devices (some pics)
We use something very similar for the drill press fixture. Since we allow the wheel base to be changed, we have also set up stops for the car block that positions the wheels at the far ends of the block. I assembled a router jig for use with a Dremel router that allows the kids (with adult hands) to...

Depending on race format, it also increases the number of times each car gets to race without increasing the time it takes for the event.gpraceman wrote:Even with small packs, it is more exciting to see 3 cars going down the track than 2.mossk wrote:I can see the advantage of going for 3 lanes if our pack grows.

Re: Good/Bad experience on race day
I really like this idea .... do you have your rules posted on a website that I can view? We don't post the rules on the web site. They are handed out to all the Scouts and emailed to all the parents. Basically, the rules say that the car must fit on the track, and we provide the length from our sta...

Re: Storage Crate for Piantedosi Track
I would hesitate to add gasketing to the lid depending on your storage conditions. If you anticipate daily temperature swings at your storage location (no climate control for example), you run the possibility of condensation forming within the box eventually leading to mold formation and hastening ...

Re: Good/Bad experience on race day
This is one of the reasons that we instituted an Outlaw race. We want everyone to be able to run their car, even if the can't or won't bring it to specification. We try to make sure that everyone knows that there is no stigma attached to the "Outlaw" name in this instance -- it is just ano...

We also built a case to donate to our Pack as a parting gift from Webelos II. The main deviations from the plan that we implemented were: - Built the case about 2 inches taller to fit all of the miscellaneous items such as finish line, size boxes, car carriers, pennant banners, scales, etc. We have ...

Re: Awards Ideas
That's a great list. We try to hand out a certificate to everyone who participates. We put a picutre of the boy and his car on the certificate and create a title specific to each. We have used just about all of the ones you listed, plus a few more. We always have a "Best Scout Theme". Some...

Our pack is small enough we try to give away lots of trophies, especially for the "Show" division. We create categories like "Most Creative", "Most Realistic", "Best Paint Job", etc. so that each kid gets some kind of award. My son and I go for speed, however...

I think that the trophies are an objective, but a secondary one. As implemented by nearly everyone, PWD is a competitive event. ... I agree, Cory. I should have said that trophies are not the MAIN objective. As you said, this is a competitive event, and as such, it gives the kids (and hopefully, th...

I think Randy hit the nail on the head. The trophies are not the objective of the Pinewood Derby. Your friend and his kids had already won the Pinewood Derby by working together to fashion a car that, slow or fast, they can point to with pride.

Re: Best or Freedom?
I just wanted to let everyone know that we ordered a Freedom Track from Piantedosi in mid-October. We had an "exhibition" race scheduled for November 19. The track showed up, packed very nicely. We spent a few hours doing the initial assembly and had the track up and working with our new M...

Re: Sponsorships, donations, and fund raisers?
For trophies, we have had some experience with AAA Wholesale Trophies at a relatively good price with free engraving, and free shipping if you order somewhere around $100, and a discount schedule for larger orders. We have also made plaques with certificates laminated for other awards. For decoratio...
