Nice Results
My sons are out of scouting and we haven't built any cars for two years. But, I still help kids that need a hand. Two weeks ago a boy and his sis' came to use my shop, advice, and help. They chose basic thin-car designs that were easy and quick to build. I cut the cars from the blocks but they did t...

32' two-lane wood track made by Quality Tracks - $100 - SOLD
I am selling my well-cared for 'Quality Tracks' 2-lane 32' track for $100. I am located in Madison, WI and would prefer to deliver via pickup. I do have a shipping box (that it originally safely came in, all the way from TN) but I suspect shipping/insurance could be costly. The track is in outstandi...

Re: COG question
46U, Let me give you some sort of anecdotal evidence. In our Pack derby yesterday we used one of my old cars as the Dummy car. This Dummy car was very fast and was running times of 2.38 on a 32' track. Late in the day we ran the dummy car backwards and it ran 2.59. This meant that the COG moved from...

Re: Car in waiting
I just ripped a bunch of 1.5" X 6' strips of wood. We place sequential numbers every 9 or 10 inches. The strips sit on a table, keep the cars off their wheels and keeps them from accidentally rolling away, and does the job.

Re: Air Power
I have an air powered car built using the Max V kit. I run 2.2 gram wheels and get times of 2.0 on a 32' track. We had our derby last weekend and I ran it right at the end. The boys went wild with chants of "cheater, cheater, cheater"!!!!!  Their was an audible gasp from the c...

Re: Hunter's 2011 entry
Well, Hunter won the overall Pack title. This was his 3rd in a row. The boys who finished 2nd and 3rd built their cars in my shop and took a lot of advice. They were about .08 secs behind hunter. I ran Hunter's car against the fastest car we ever made and they were very close, with Hunter's finishin...

Re: RR Question am I on the right track? (pun intended)
dadto2, The way I do it is to narrow the front of the car where the DFW axle hole is. When the DFW touches the rail, the back rear wheel stays off the rail because the width of the car is greater in the rear. I generally shave off about 3/16th of an inch in front. 3/16" seems a bit aggressive....

Re: RR Question am I on the right track? (pun intended)
Goal #2 isn't part of the "equation." The end goal is to "steer into the rail" while the "rear wheels stay off the rail." Both of these are important. Hmmm... Okay. So a follow up question or two. I get how to make the DFW steer the car. No problem in theory. The rear ...

Re: Hunter's 2011 entry
the cars looks nice, the weight placement looks very good. I run 3/8th, you are just fine and still safe on the balance point. have not worries. I run that the same on a 32 AND 42 FOOT TRACK. Sporty Thanks. If we have problems at the Pack derby we'll probably build a new car for the District. I'm p...

Yep, I have 4 identical scales that we use at Pack. I think the District wants to use them again this year, too.tmbnorm wrote:Do you have the "official" scales? Scales can differ slightly.

Re: Hunter's 2011 entry
On a 32' track, you might get away with the 7/16" COM. Do you get to test? If so, you could have some lead tape and move it if needed. We used lead tape from ceiling fans. I have a very similar test track and I store the Pack track at my house. But, a few years ago we stopped testing (after do...

Re: Hunter's 2011 entry
tmbnorm, oh, I hear you . . . 7/16 is definitely aggressive. We run on a 32' Wood 3 lane Piantedosi at Pack, but I don't know what we run on at District. We have used a COM of 5/8th before at Pack with great success, but this might be pushing it a little bit too much. On a different note, I neglecte...

Hunter's 2011 entry
My son is now in 3rd grade and he's been entering the Pack derby since he was in kindergarten. Every year he does more of the work on his car and he's now at the point where he does everything except using the table saw to cut the block. He's had tremendous success over the years and has won several...

Re: Do you hold back info locally?
I have no speed secrets to share with the competition (4th place in den for my 2 boys), I do have tips on painting and building a better looking car. I'm a car painter by trade and a model builder for a hobby. When we got home from the weigh-in and tech night I told my wife I'd never seen so many &...
