Re: 4 wheels do not touch the ground
Here's how I see it. A 6 year old should be able to take the box, dump the kit out on the table, paint it, sticker it, then take his little hammer and pound those nails in to the car. WHATEVER comes out of that should be race-able without penalty. It is practically guaranteed there will not be 4 whe...

Re: 4 wheels do not touch the ground
I think if the pack/district rules are going to demand 4 on the floor, the pack should be prepared to install the wheels for the scouts. Maybe pre drill all the blocks? Make no mistake, I am completely against this rule. The bottom line is, the official BSA kit was not designed to support this rule....

I didn't realize it until he said something but my son has been selecting his derby cars carefully- to go along with his legos.

Re: Best putty or clay for car designs
I have just used Sugru to fix my notebook power cord and case. This stuff is a silicone based playdoh like substance that cold cures flexible and tough. I suspect it will wind up in at least one of my cars at some point.

Lol, that's my water rocket derby launcher. It will launch up to 5 rockets simultaneously. Just finished cutting out the metal launch gate that will hold them all in place today.dna1990 wrote:Cool Idea. Now what are the pipes and valves for in the background...?

Here's a picture with cars on it. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6tyTIqTKce8/URFYPttbTlI/AAAAAAAAALo/Cvh3g-QnNEE/s400/displaystand.JPG The dimensions are Car holders- 7 5/8" by 3-1/2" 7 5/8" long, by 1-3/4" (or you could go with 1-5/8" wide if you run narrow width), tong...

Re: So, what does your username mean?
So Having Wandered, that's a cool quote, where is it from? My Google search turned up nothing. Here's the source I'm familiar with: "Not all those who wander are lost" - J. R. R. Tolkien, All That is Gold Does Not Glitter yep, suppose it would help if I added the attrib. Not a huge Tolkie...

Re: PWD Car Displays for under $25
The car stands appear to be angled downward. How do the cars keep from sliding off the platforms? Guess it would help if I took a picture with cars on em :-) They are about the same width as the rub strip, and just over 7 1/2" long so the wheels keep them in place. Tacky dots can be used for t...

Re: "Slim" Cars
Are you talking about the retro look where they fashioned PWD after Soapbox Derby cars? I'd say that's probably been done a lot. The "arrow" shape is pretty common as well. Here's my current attempt at an arrow car: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qv0-1xNbgd0/UQFPzc-KlQI/AAAAAAAAAK4/bmJ...

PWD Car Displays for under $25
These are going to be our B&G/Pinewood Derby centerpieces. I'm not much for the decorative frilly centerpieces that are just going to go home and sit on a shelf until someone finally decides to throw them out. So with an eye towards the minimalist (as in budget), I was able to come up with a des...

Re: BSA policy on melting lead?
Our government bans just about anything designed for use by children from containing any minute amounts of lead. Lets face it, we are technically manufacturers for childrens products, who also make use of child labour :-) Our cars were weighted mostly with lead this year, I used the 3/8" "...

Re: Make it shiny...check!
I see you cover the whole car up to the slots. Did you ask about this being considered a bushing in a previous thread? I guess you decided its not. Was it hard to cover the slots without making a sharp edge anywhere? Seth P.S. looks cool Thanks! I ended up spraying a couple coats of clear gloss coa...

Re: Make it shiny...check!
Bare-Metal made by Bare Metal Foil Co. out of Farmington. Got it at my local hobby store while I was looking at paint. Something about it grabbed my eye... :-) It came in a 6x11 sheet. I've put a clear topcoat on it to keep the edges from getting peeled up. Definitely a new challenge to work with es...

Still a work in progress. The covering is adhesive backed copper foil.
Thinking of adding flames, also still need to paint the arrow on the top.

Re: Monokote covering
So in talking about monokote, I don't think the discussion is complete without talking about the main reason Monokote is what it is. Properly applied, monokote creates an extremely lightweight, stiff, stressed skin structure. When heated, it shrinks and applies tension to the structure it adheres to...
