Re: Hello again from Arizona

And I can certainly empathize with your "wanting to be prepared" approach. Last year, we set up for the Four Peaks District Derby the night before, and a critical connector on Pack 918's track (our main competition track) broke. Fortunately, they were able to fix it late that night before ...

Re: Hello again from Arizona

Greetings back from another part of the Valley. :salute: Hope you can get your track and timer issues worked out. A 6-lane track seems like fun (although I'm still recovering from the impressive sight of Pack 134's 12-lane track up in Cave Creek last Saturday.) A few folks from some Districts are tr...

Re: Need new site logo

I really don't like any of the ones I've seen. None of them seem to capture the experience of a boy (with help from a parent if needed) turning a block of plain wood into a fun fast car. It also doesn't help that I can only see 16 of the entries, no matter how many times I click the "see more e...

Re: Merry Christmas!

My unexpected Christmas present: while looking for a wayward present and the old video camera, I found our fugitive bottle of Krytox (that had been missing for far too long).

Re: In charge of purchasing track and running 2016 PWD....

If all our participating families were trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, and cheerful (and also hopefully thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent), the rules could be very simple or even verbal. But one thing I've learned is that there are a few of Those Families (seldom ...

Re: Mold numbers and used/last year's wheels

I looked at several US wheel sets (from car kits and wheel kits) I purchased recently from the Scout Store. Two observations: The wheels for sale in this year's kits and wheel sets (black or colored) seem to have a much rougher and "bubbly" texture on the inside of the wheel (near the &quo...

BSA Block Weight

(I did multiple searches to see if this topic had been created yet, and couldn't find anything. Apologies if it's a duplicate). I volunteered to purchase the Pinewood Derby kits for our Pack from the Scout Store, and I figured that since I had 54 unopened boxes (all copyright dated 2012), I'd run a...

Re: In charge of purchasing track and running 2016 PWD....

Our District (Four Peaks) has a good rules set that has evolved and improved through the years, and that is now being adopted by other Districts in Grand Canyon Council. We've made the rules modular, allowing uniform car specifications combined with flexible event rules. http://www.richardcmoeur.com...

Re: Sutton excel spread sheet

Stan, I tend to spend what meager cash we have in our household on things other than new computers, so that might account for much of the difficulty (typing this on a decade-old PowerPC Mac which does just about everything I need it to, but might not run all page scripts flawlessly). My primary brow...

Re: Sutton excel spread sheet

Our Pack has used the Chris Sutton spreadsheet (3-lane flavor) for several years. It's a good resource for one run per lane, but we wanted to give the boys two runs per lane (we're not a huge Pack, and we wanted the boys to get more racing after all their hard work). So one thing led to another, and...

Pinewood Derby and the New Cub Scout Adventures

I'm getting ready to teach a class on Pinewood Derby at our annual Council training this weekend, and I was going through the new Cub Scout Adventures to see how they tie in to Pinewood Derby. From what I see, a boy's work on a Pinewood Derby car can count toward Baloo the Builder (all parts) if he'...

Re: Mass-Producing Lead Weights for Scout Use?

Our Pack goes through about two 1 lb / 46" rolls of 1/4" lead wire every season. $5.69 a roll at Sportsman's Warehouse. Fits nicely in a 17/64" hole and covers easily with wood putty. A typical car takes about seven 1 3/8" pieces, easily cut with pliers. The boys wear disposable ...

Re: District level Survey Monkey

At our District race, we use a 4-lane aluminum track and electronic timing system provided by one of the Packs in the District.

If the boy started the year as a Webelos 2, er, Arrow of Light, then he is fully eligible to race as such, regardless of what his uniform looks like on race day.

Re: Pinewood Derby World Championship

Revell axles are technically BSA axles, so they're permitted. Bob has a full set of US & Chinese BSA axles for comparison at the inspection table. Now as to whether the shaft & tip are the same piece of metal: that would require some dang careful machining and construction. Not impossible, b...

Time: the set of 4 photos might add about 1-2 minutes to the process, it the photographer is on top of things and the camera is behaving. We also do same-day check-in starting about an hour prior to the race (no overnight impound or anything like that).
