Re: RaceReplay hanging?
I'm not familiar with the internals of this software, but my laptop is not running out of memory (I have a desktop gadget up that shows it). Unless RR runs in a VM like a Java app would, I think it's not that. It feels more like a driver issue ... like RR is blocking waiting on something that never ...

RaceReplay hanging?
This is my fifth year running our pack's derby, and last year I added RaceReplay. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned ... we had problems with RaceReplay hanging the laptop we were using to run the race (GPRM & RaceReplay). This happened twice, requiring a forced powerdown/reboot to recov...

Re: "Fun" race starting method?
Thanks for the tips. Yeah , we don't do a countdown or anything ... just looking to do the same as you, kid in lane 1 gets to start the race. Even a button with LEDs may be cool ...

Re: "Fun" race starting method?
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a Staples easy button, which is the backup plan.
I like the plunger idea, and another non-themed idea someone else came up with was a big slot machine style pull handle.

"Fun" race starting method?
For the first time, this year our pack will have an electronic start gate on our track. A few years ago, before we purchased our Freedom track, we hired a guy to come run our race for us. He brought his track, timer, etc., and the electronic start gate was actuated by a modified Staples Easy button....

Re: Slo mo frame rate in Video Replay
Okay, that makes sense. Any suggestions on some "test" software that will simply display the video input and display the framerate? I was planning to use my wife's laptop (Core 2 Duo 1.4GHz), but could use my work laptop (Core i5) instead if necessary.

Re: Slo mo frame rate in Video Replay
RaceReplay has no control over the frame rate. That is limited by your hardware. With video capture devices you are typically limited to no better than 30 fps. With a digital video camera and using a FireWire connection, you can generally get frame rates up to 60 fps. You can go to the Advanced Set...

My daughter has the pink version of that exact scooter. I like your idea of covering both rear wheels to make them look like one!

Re: Razor Scooter derby car?
Thanks Randy, I know exactly the stuff you're talking about. I'm pretty sure I have some in the workshop somewhere. I'll keep that in mind. I'll be in touch, btw, to upgrade our pack's copy of GPRM for this year's race!

Re: Razor Scooter derby car?
Good point. I actually have some "Aluminum" spray paint we used for another project that turned out *very* metallic & real looking. We're definitely planning to use that same paint again. With some good sealer, we should be able to get rid of the wood grain look and make it look like m...

Re: Razor Scooter derby car?
Agreed, I was considering fold-down bars like the real ones do. The high CG problem is kinda why I'm here ... Hoping y'all have some suggestions there. We did a car a couple years ago with exhaust pipes, using aluminum tubing that is very light. It may work. He's more interested in the appearance an...

Razor Scooter derby car?
For this year's derby, one of my sons has decided he wants to build a Razor Scooter (with four wheels, of course). The idea seems pretty straightforward to me, but if anyone out there has done something similar in the past, we're open to suggestions on materials, photos, etc. Searching didn't turn a...

Re: Pinewood Derby for Boy Scouts?
This looks to be a fairly old topic, but I figured I'd throw in my $.02. Our pack and troop are a fairly close-knit group, since the six boys that make up our local troop are all "graduates" from our pack in the last couple of years. This year, the troop helped out at the pack derby ... ma...

Re: Hydroplane hull design: catamaran or "standard"
What was the weight of each boat in grams? Can you build legally from Styrofoam? -Terry I don't know, and I understand that weight could likely have been a factor in the speed difference (and, frankly, I didn't care what the reason was ... I just knew I had to build a boat in a relatively short per...

Re: Hydroplane hull design: catamaran or "standard"
Well, since I didn't get any input, I built one of each. I built a "standard" hydroplane BSA-hulled boat and a catamaran with hydroplane-shaped hulls. The catamaran was by far the faster boat, though these were quickly-built test boats. I suspect that building a hydroplane from the BSA hul...
