Re: Piantedosi Oars Track Review

We've raced for three years at District on a Piantedosi track. It is a very nicely built track that has fairly smooth transitions. This track is owned and operated by another Pack who takes very good care of it. I too think that they should offer a finished track as there was a new additional sectio...

Re: What's the Best Wheel and Axle Polish?

Jewel, I tried the jeweler’s rouge that came in a Dremel kit. It was red so I’m guessing that it must have been the same “Red Rouge” that is on the Graves Company site. This did not produce as smooth (finer scratches) a surface as the Mother’s Chrome Mag Polish or another metal polish called Flitz. ...

Re: Track selection

One consideration for choosing a track material type that has not been addressed here is storage and what it can do to a track. The reason I mention this is that our Pack is using a wooden track that is stored in a non-controlled environment. By this I mean that while it is inside a building and is ...

Re: The Cub Scout axles - those raised bumps on the shaft

Okay guys, let me show my ignorance here: there are different grades of jeweler’s rouge? The only grade I’ve seen and used comes in a Dremel kit. I’ve found that I get smoother results (verified with use of a microscope) with Mother’s Chrome Polish. Is there a grade of jeweler’s rouge that would pro...

Re: Inside Hub treatment

Sorry for the delay Bob  We use the Pro-Axle Tool from Max-V to sort through and size the axle holes first. We burnish (?) the inside of the wheel hub with pipe cleaners dipped in graphite and than match an axle to a wheel (after starightening, deburring and polishing the axle) and load it up ...

Re: Team racing

Mike, This is a great idea! We haven't had any planning sessions for our Packs PWD race yet so I will mention this racing format for the Adults. I got the impression last year that a lot of the newer Scouts/Parents did not participate because they felt the more experienced Scouts/Parents had ...

Re: PowerPoint presentation on PWD Design / Construction

Stan, I have tried for the last four years to have a pwd workshop for our Pack but have only had a father-son team show up. I usually type up some notes every year and hand them out with the pwd cars but have found that most people need something visual to go be. I have thought of doing s short vide...

Re: To True or not to True, that is the question!

Randy, I can't remember for sure what wheel cavity numbers we used for sure but it seemed like #8, 11, and 15's; but we had a mix of pwd kits from the year before and had some wheels with these same cavity numbers that were discarded. I imagine that unless you buy all of the kits at once that you co...

Re: To True or not to True, that is the question!

Lathe cutting the wheels is specifically not allowed at Pack or District level (I imagine this is because not many have a lathe or access to one and there are safety concerns with the younger boys using one). Anyway, we sand ours to try and true them up but only after sorting through many wheels and...

Re: Which race scheduling method do you use?

We use double elimination but not by choice. This is due to track and finish line timing restrictions. We are waiting on a new track to update our racing method and will have to research the various methods that the finish line software will support.

LEDs

Sbelle, You can overdrive (run at a higher voltage) an LED just like you can a standard bulb. Just like a standard bulb they will be brighter but burn out quicker. But... (and you just knew there had to be one!), with the life of an LED being 150,000 hours, so what if you used 1.5X or 2X the current...
