An Outlaw Race is a great idea! I would appreciate any rules you may have on this as well. We are running a Siblings Race for the young brothers and sisters of our Cub Scouts and an Adults Race for the Leaders, Parents and brothers/sisters that are 13 and above.

Re: Going Out on a High Note
Congrats PWTom and son! Now you can volunteer to help all of those single parent Cub Scouts or even those that just need help building their pinewood derby cars. I hope to get my yearly pinewood derby car building fix again this year by offering to help all who ask (second year without a Cub ...

Re: Painting body around axle holes
Harvey and Michael, We tape over this area too and later remove the tape and rub graphite into it prior to installing the wheels and axles (we sand this area smooth a flat first). I know that others use white glue and graphite, epoxy (with or without graphite) and even Max-V recommends clearcoating ...

Re: Too early to polish axels?
Last night I checked an axle that has been in a cup in my shop for at least two years. It was filed, sanded and polished with Mothers. There also was an axle that had been micro meshed. Neither showed signs of rust. Now my shop is not normally heated or air conditioned and we live in southeast Alaba...

Re: Pre-sorting wheels...
In the past I pre-sorted wheels for all the kits that our Pack had for sale. It was “first come – first serve” so those that bought their kits early got their choice of mold numbers or if all four wheels were from the same mold number or if it was two sets of pairs instead. Unfortunately there were ...

Re: Question on using body skins/stick on details
Tia, On the first car we used a body skin on we just left it so that the body skin covered the axle hole (it was meant to run slow and lose to the Cub Scouts). On the second car I cut the body skin where the hubs were prior to putting it on. Hmmm, Red Lightning or holgraphic... well everyone knows t...

Re: Too early to polish axels?
The only thing I can think would happen would be that the axles start to rust. When you shape, sand and polish the axles you are taking the nickel plating off the axles and baring the steel (?) base metal underneath. Of course I have never seen any rusted axles before that I can think of and since I...

Re: Question on using body skins/stick on details
Tia, We just sand the sides of the pine block flat and smooth (800 grit?) prior to shaping the body. Than we tape over the body where the wheel hubs will contact to protect this area from everything else we do to the car. When it is shaped and painted, we install the wheels and will remove the tape ...

Re: Decals
Spoke with a fellow Cub Scout Leader last night and he said he has bought and used some decal paper from Decal Paper.com ( http://www.decalpaper.com/ ). You don’t have to use the Testor’s program to print decals with. You can use any program that allows you to print. Some programs will allow you to ...

Re: What tools do you use to shape your cars?
We don’t race WIRL but my sons and I have shaped a few pinewood derby cars. What we use is dictated by what shape we want when we are finished (although the shape we end up with is sometimes different than what we started to make… ). In addition to most of the tools already listed we have use...

Re: Decals
The first time we tried to make our own decals it was just some text. This was printed on some of that clear overhead projection paper. This was black text on clear material so there were no problems with the printing being dark enough to read – it will be if you use colors and of course unless you ...

Re: Between the wheel hub and Body
We just used the graphite-moly lube we use on the wheels/axles. I may get my oldest son to pull the wheels/axles off of his Velociraptor car that has been so fast in past years to replace them with new ones. If he does I'll look at the wheel hub to body contact area for wear. This particular car has...

I also would like to know the cost of the new stop section after we find out that it works better! We have a Piantedosi Freedom track and have had to add an additional 8 foot section after the timer and elevate the end of this section 8 inches to get the boys cars to stop without damaging ...

Re: moving the axle location
Just a suggestion here if you are cutting some of the block off of the back and gluing it to the front; make sure that someone inspecting your car can see that the wood has been glued onto the front. We had an inspector at a District PWD Race want to DQ a car because someone could not have used the ...
