Re: The Cub Scout axles - those raised bumps on the shaft
I would think with the raised bumps, it would automaticly throw off the alignment since the nail would not be sitting straight in the drill pressed axel hole. The bumps referred to are the ones within 3/8" of the nail head. The bumps resulting from cutting the point also need to be dealt with ...

Re: Hub Treatment.
It isn't quite what you're looking for, but I've seen a sanding bit for Dremel tools that is shaped like a cylinder with a round depression in the end.
I have not seen any sanding drum type attachments that would go on a rotary tool. Might you be talking about a tapered steel cutting bit?

Re: Speed impact of various types of lubrication
Do you use this silicon lube in combination with Graphite? No. Don't mix dry lubricants with wet lubricants. You usually end up with a sticky sludge that is worse than nothing. If you're lucky, then it's better than nothing, but worse than either lubricant used separately. Does it violate the rule ...

Re: Inertial and Vibration Losses?
Another Mike?? Glad to meet you. I can't chat long, but I'd like to know more about "Sorbothane". I'd do a web search, but I have "real" work to do! I can't say much right now, but the suspension angle has possibilities for four wheelers. Give me a few days (weeks?) and I'll be ...

Re: Not Just Boat Design, It Tests the Pilot Too!
Michael, We have our Pack's Raingutter Regatta coming up on October 18th. I would like to hear all I can as far as boat building and race management. As far as running the races; to win a 'heat' and advance (we use double elimination), a racer must win on both the right and left lanes. I have noted...

Re: Hub Treatment.
Remember that the purpose of the taper is to cause the contact between wheel and body to happen as close as possible to the wheel's center of rotation. If you cant cone the hub, cone the body! Since the bore is slightly larger near the inner hub face, you must also be wary of binding if the area of...

Re: Wal-Mart Day at the Races '03 -- oops...
I don't think they had any around here but if they advertised as poorly as the previously I could have just missed it. The previous year was basicly a joke as the put the track pieces together backward so your car could (and my daughters did!) jump the track if you hit a section right. My son did co...

Re: Hub Treatment.
Since hub coning is not allowed in our derby, we are going to try to cut a groove using a dremel around the axel slot to cut down friction that way. If you do it as a gentle taper into the car body as the distance from the axle increases, you should achieve the same effect as coning the hub. Of cou...

Re: Wheel Sanding Techniques
Since the intent of our rules do not allow for re-shaping the stock BSA wheels we use sandpaper over a block of wood. This keeps the wheel tread area flat so that we no problems come inspection time. If you look at the stock BSA wheel tread, it is not flat but convex in shape and yet the rules we r...

Wheel Sanding Techniques
How do you sand your wheels? I prefer to get a small strip of sandpaper and fold it in half and then loop it over the wheel but some prefer sanding the wheel against a wood block. I would think the former would be easier for young children, what do you think.

How short can you make the propellor holder
How short can you make the propellor holder? I would think short as possible would be better because the rubber bands would be tighter. Would you run into any problems getting it too close due to the hook rubbing on nose piece or something else?

How thin can you actually make the shell of the rocket, asside from the carrier of course.
