Re: Watch this Space: Team Vitamin K Progress Pics...

Here are some pics from the final cars. I can see about getting more angles later. So the first is my son's car. He dubbed it "Super Slinger Wave Guy." I asked him more than once if that was the name he really wanted. It was. He placed 2nd in his den, 5th overall in pack. A little disappoi...

Pack race results

Well, Pack races are over. My son's car didn't do as well as we'd hoped. He made 2nd in his den (edged out by the kid who took 2nd place last year) and 5th overall for the pack. Ironically, my car swept the masters' division and set the track speed record -- wish our roles had been reversed there. I...

Re: Mid America Pinewood Derby Live Video Testing

I really enjoyed being able to chat with the other pineheads during last year's Mid-America race, so I'd like to see it this year, too.

Re: Acceptable Bore Enlargement?

Yes, BSA, made in the USA wheel. To measure bore, I insert the back end of a standard caliper into the bore and slide til it stops. Granted, I can only measure from one side. The other is too recessed. I don't have any Novus 2, so it's either toothpaste, graphite or nothing at this point, with which...

Acceptable Bore Enlargement?

So, wanted to do a quickie bore polish on my kids' car wheels before check-in tomorrow, but I don't want to enlarge the bores. I've heard a q-tip stick recommended, with whitening toothpaste, so I tried this. I did a check of the bore size before and after polishing with a test wheel with my digital...

Re: Dad/daughter build - Process and Tools Used

Very nice! I love seeing folks' build processes. I might have to "steal" your axle polishing setup.

I see you have one of those vibrating tool thingies. Do you get a lot of utility out of it? I see them go on sale on Woot.com now and again, but have resisted thus far. :)

Re: Watch this Space: Team Vitamin K Progress Pics...

Progress plods along! Was fearing a blitz to the finish last night because the weigh-in was supposed to be tonight, but due to a snow event, it has been pushed to Thursday! More time to work! Here are the kids' pine chassis, along with mine (assembled and primed). My daughters' is a skateboard that ...

Re: Watch this Space: Team Vitamin K Progress Pics...

I didn't actually know they had name designations, but that does seem to make sense. In my (extremely) limited knowledge of Japanese, the "O" prefix designates something big or great (e.g., the founder of a martial art might be referred to as "O Sensei", and, in Judo, the "b...

Re: Watch this Space: Team Vitamin K Progress Pics...

So we're slowly, but surely, making progress. Gotta ramp it up. Weigh in is this coming Monday! :nervous: This is not a chicken. This is a Totoro for my daughter's car. It will feature 3 Totoros riding a giant skateboard...the largest is lying on his belly. If you don't know what a Totoro is, go out...

Re: Storing and Transporting impounded Cars?

While I'm not dismissing this point, the arrangement pre-dates my involvement and has already been decided on, in terms of policy and what's been announced, and what spaces have been rented. As far as check-in goes, I will be on-site with my power tools, epoxy, spare wheels, axles, blocks, sandpaper...

Storing and Transporting impounded Cars?

So our race day is on a Saturday and the weigh-in is the preceding Monday. That means that we'll be impounding 50-60 cars for the better part of a week. Even better, due to some circumstances, our Pack will be holding the weigh-in in one location and the race in another. This means we need to find a...

Yikes, any way we can talk you out of trying this? What kind of build do you have in mind? Maybe we can offer you some alternative suggestions for cutting your block.

Re: Poor mans Scroll Saw

There's actually a commercial product, the "Blade Runner", I believe, that is essentially an inverted jigsaw on a table mount. That said, I own the Harbor Freight jigsaw (got it with a 20% off coupon, to boot!). I'm actually pretty happy with it. The little plastic piece in the base is my ...

For those of you who run colored wheels...

Do you buy enough tubes of colored wheels to be able to match wheels, measure runout, etc., or do you just "go with it" and run with whatever you've got? My kids want to use colored wheels, but I'm not about to buy them in bulk. I have plenty of black wheels to choose from, however.
