Re: The ultimate in performance data collection
Stan, the links worked for me? How about this one? http://www.silabs.com/products/wireless/Pages/thunderboard-react-derby-car-kit.aspx I'm a big fan of multiple sensors in a single lane but I wonder if this board might be useful to a scout that doesn't have access to a track and timer? If they had a...

Maybe rather than a big 9v, try one of these miniature 12v batteries?:

Re: Why trailing fenders work
Although I haven't tried it to be sure, this does suggest that just a trailing fender is better than no fender at all. I think that is something to consider if you like to run a long wheelbases in scouts for extra stability that leaves no room for a front fender. Definitely an idea worth testing! O...

Re: Liquid Glass ?
Liquid Glass Legend is a popular wheel bore treatment. If I had to guess, he used that with Krytox. I've never tried running Legend dry. It doesn't take much oil to make it work. It would look dry. If you rules don't allow for oil, then they might need to read " Must have visible evidence of gr...

Re: To Narrow Front or Not on Four Wheels Touching Car
If I had to build a four wheel touching straight runner I would narrow both sides on the front, but I would prefer to build a railrider and narrow the dominant side only if the rules allow. Either way you go, I would give the car a trial assembly before I cut anything off and see how much you need t...

Re: Ideas towards Cub-centric wheel improvement...
Which are the same problems you need to overcome at the present? Except that a wood lathe would already have a mounted spindle with a speed control and a sturdy frame to mount a tool holder. My wood lathe has a threaded spindle but also has a Morse taper. You can buy a MT shank ER collet chuck to bo...

VK, I'm not sure that a slide holder is going to be up to the task of cutting plastic?
If there's any deflection your accuracy will go out the window.
Too late now since I see you've started ordering parts, but what about perusing craigslist for a small used wood lathe for your starting point?

Darin, if it's just for display purposes, why not use a gray two part epoxy in the canopy mold? You could either mold in a mounting stud or insert a dowel before it hardens?

Hay Vitamin K, Can't blame you for wanting to go whole hog for the Grizzly lathe. I'd like to have one to tinker with myself, ;) Don't think any one would blame you for staying in the the range you were looking to spend for a lathe as well... so I'll toss this link your way. http://www.ebay.com/itm...

If parents want to avoid lead, what about square steel rod? As an example: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-4-in-x-36-in-Plain-Steel-Cold-Rolled-Square-Rod-801197/204273977 Cut into 1.5" lengths it would fit into the same space as 6 of the 1/4" tungsten cubes. A 1.5" piece of 1/4...

Re: Providing Better Kits for Scouts?
The standard BSA car kit with a set of Maximum Velocity #4094 axles would be a nice kit but the axles cost as much as the car.
Playing the devil's advocate here - you know that including better quality axles in the kit means less work that the scout gets to do on the car, right?

Re: Making Wheels Round
Pin seems fairly well polished, but you do bring up a valid point. Unfortunately, I don't own any pin gages, so I can't do a before/after check. I do intend to do bore prep /after/ shaving the wheels down for outside trueness, though. Speaking of bore prep, I've always wondered how much the bore ge...
