Re: Nitro Dan's 2014 Line-Up
If you build a "rail rider" on this type of track (riding to the outside rail), you have a better chance of passing your opponent without collision (causing a collision from behind). I did this with my green truck I built last year. By using razor wheels on the truck I was able to increase...

Re: Nitro Dan's 2014 Line-Up
The track was actually made as a prototype. We had heard of Pinewood Demolition Derby from the Sam Houston Council in Texas, but never could get anyone to post a picture of what theirs looked like. We had the basic concept, so we built this from 3/8 inch plywood with a black laminate surface glued t...

Re: Nitro Dan's 2014 Line-Up
It's a "U" shaped track with a starting gate at each end. There are no center guide rails, but side guides to keep the cars on the track (at least until they hit). The lane is just wide enough so two cars could barely pass each other if one pulled to the one side while the other pulled to ...

Re: Nitro Dan's 2014 Line-Up
One other thing I forgot to mention, the kids and I also entered the Cub Scout District's Demolition Pinewood Derby this year. The rules allow you to use cars from previous years, so we just used the ones from last year . I was pretty much under the impression that Demolition Derbies are very random...

The design is my Pendulum design. You can find the template (Wing Template 18) in my template collection over here: http://www.derbytalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=6218 I was trying to find a evil looking Jack-O-Lantern to put on the front of the car and was going to nickname the car "Mad Jac...

Nitro Dan's 2014 Line-Up
Well, districts were this past weekend, and that officially ends my Pinewood Derby season for this year. This first picture is my car from this year. I took first place in the Adult Outlaw Division at both the Cub Scout and Girl Scout district races. It is a straight runner using BSA wheels that I c...

Re: District level Survey Monkey
You might want to try keeping the race out of the month of May. Last year our district race was in April and we got 62 racers. This year we had it this past weekend in May and only had only 31 racers. :idk: I'm chalking it up to the "wrong time of year", but since we were planning for at l...

Pro Body Jig Modification
I started using the Pro Body Jigs at my workshops a few years ago. Our first year we tried using a Pin Vise (as recommended) to drill the holes in the blocks using the jig. Although this is the best method for the least wear and tear on the jigs, we found that the proceedure was to slow and way to d...

Re: Sponsors at Districts?
Second year now running District races. We are more like Speedster. Top 3 racers from each Den or top 15 fastest cars for the Pack qualify. Charge is $6 per racers or a total of $90 per pack. We have 24 Packs in the district, but only about half partisipate and not all of those send a full complimen...

Re: Presentation on a Troy Thorne's Book
Very well done! I hope he got a good grade on it! My son (Boy Scout, now in high school) entered the York County, Science and Engineering Fair for his first time this year (Junior Division). He did his project on "Weight Effects in Pinewood Derby". Although he did not make Grand Champion, ...

Re: Pinewood Derby Participation Survey
1. District 2. Top 3 from each Den OR the Top 15 fastest cars in your pack. This allows smaller packs to fully attend and only limits the largers ones. 3. For the Official District Race it is one division per each rank. We also have side events that anyone can enter (Outlaw, Demolition Derby, and Ei...

Re: Krytox spray
I haven't tested it against "the waxing", but I have seen it out-perform "spray on the axles in conjuction with Krytox oil". Of course, it in itself is a "spray on the axles in conjunction with graphite".

Re: Krytox spray
By itself, the SailKote longevity is short, but when used in conjunction with a good graphite (no additives), it holds up for as long as the graphite does (around 20 runs). IMO, it performs everybit as good as using Krytox 100 oil. I prefer it to the use of a straight Krytox oil lube and wipe proces...

Re: Krytox spray
Sounds like they are using Team McLubes "SailKote" on the axles. The spray contains another form of Krytox (102 I believe). The aresol goes on wet, but dries on the axles. By itself it isn't a sufficient lube for axles, but when used with a pure graphite (not stuff with moly in it), you ge...

I believe the wording was "Out of graphite and sawdust come million $ cars and priceless memories."
It's PinewoodTopia's tag line.
