Noskills, my cars with canopies. They were rock solid steady.

Re: Tungston canopy and stability
I used the canopies this year with great success, but my cars were less than a 1/4" thick so the weight was plenty low.

Re: Adding a Friction Brake to an Old Track
We strongly encourage people not to put weight under the car but the few people who do used screws or a LOT of glue so it hasn't been a problem in our pack. On my own car I had a last minute pinch of tungsten putty in a hole in the bottom of my car that was slightly lower than the wood and it didn't...

Re: Check-in of a BUNCH of Cars?
Yes, as Stan says, if there are five different groups that won't be racing against each other, you can set up five different inspection lines and not have to worry about inspection standards and scale calibration being different between the stations. It also depends on how serious the inspection is ...

Re: Check-in of a BUNCH of Cars?
I vote for an assembly line check in. Break it down into seperate jobs. Each person should need the car for all of 10 seconds each to check their particular area of expertise. That's 6 cars being fed into the line per minute which is 360 cars per hour. Waiting two hours to check in cars is reasonabl...

Re: How many cars have you built?
4 cars for my older son. 2 cars for my younger son. 3 cars for my daughter (just for fun). 2 "test cars" for myself (haven't convinced the other adults to hold our own races). My father had formed the first pack (and later troop) in the town I grew up in and my three older brothers were in...

Re: Crash Strength.
My kids cars made it through the derby fine despite them trying to fly off the end of the Best Track stop section we use. However, two (out of three) cars didn't make it home safely from the Blue & Gold (where the kids vote on most creative, authentic, did it myself, etc). My son picked his car ...

Re: Using a maple block
I think it is pine afterall, but it's not the piece of wood in the BSA box. I was at a craft store today and glanced at the Revell Pinewood kits. The body shape is identical to the Revell Funny Car. So I'm guessing that they started with that and then gutted it.

Re: 1st in House
Unless the track is stored where the pack meetings are, it's a lot to ask to have the guy who keeps it to drag it out a few days early.

Re: Sons 2012 entry in out pack pinewood derby
I went the other way, I came in to weigh in a hair light and just added tungsten putty to the bottom at weigh in until I got to the max.

...using expensive machinery to lighten the wheels. [...] the only powertool I used was a drill press. :scratching: As mentioned before , lightening wheels does not require "expensive machinery" (unless one thinks that a drill press is expensive). And then there's always the socket-and-sa...
