Re: 2010 BSA kit changes

It appears as if Revell is no longer selling wheels, etc. at Michael's stores. But maybe at HobbyTown stores. FWIW

Re: Block grain patterns and weights

I always prefer lighter blocks. Then go for as much vertical grain. [...] Looks as if I might be wrong based upon what others are saying. I am not sure what is right or wrong either, but my impression has been that drill bits are more likely to walk when going against the grain. I thought that brad...

:scratching: That makes me think a little. This will be our boys' last year. I think I really need to ask them what they want to build and take the time to make it. We'll see ...

Re: Harbor Freight 15% and 20% Off Coupons

I would like to pick up a drill press to do such things as canted axle holes, but not if the runout is too high. Is anybody using these lower priced units or is everybody using the Proxxon or MicroMark? I have one of these, but we use it for drilling out weight pockets and polishing axles - as I sa...

Re: Harbor Freight 15% and 20% Off Coupons

Just noticed that their 8", very basic drill press is on sale (at least on the website) for $50. If it's the same in the stores and you use an ever present 20 % off coupon, now you are talking $40 + tax for a drill press that, while not a fine instrument, gives you a lot for the money. Also thi...

I have come to like the "forgiving" part. But remember, friends should never let friends lock their axles with Monster (CA) Glue (the runny stuff that expands like crazy).

Re: Pro Body Tool with shims?

I think there is ample discussion on this forum about putting a drill bit on the far end of the side you are drilling with the ProBody Tool. I remember seeing that, but never did that procedure myself. Seems like a good choice and you can't go wrong with Derby Worx tools. Here is one thread that com...

Re: Pin Gauges

quadad's parenthetical comment suggests that the wider range of gauges are most useful when also measuring the older-style wheels. Yep ! I had been saving a bag of 0.093" bore, older-style wheels while we sought better bore prep methods. I ended up keeping them one year too long !!! My steel g...

Re: Pin Gauges

Mine are also Vermont Gage, but not black oxide, they range from .0925 to 0.099, also Class ZZ - Plus tolerance. They have served well the last 3-4 years (older to newer style wheels). Make sure you get enough the first time. Not trying to confuse you, but in case someone sees this series: 111309250...

Re: Rail Riding - "How To Guide"

It adds a little bit of toe-out. :-) I'm still scratching my head a bit about that. I drew up a car on the computer with axle holes placed as Pwrd By Tungsten described. It is possible to get the top (at least the front 4-5 inches) to be level or very slightly downward in this configuration. The bo...

Re: Rail Riding - "How To Guide"

Running the rail: ... 3/16" height DFW 4/16" height raised 5/16" height rears Wow ! I know you have mentioned it before, but assuming similar height wheels all around that puts the front of your car up on like a 1.6 degree angle. I know you are running fast, but I can't figure out ho...

Re: 1 1/8" Tungsten Round

It is curious about these 1 1/8" rounds. I have seen (3) vendors advertise what I would call the "original" 3 oz. size - 1 1/8" x 1/4" (or 0.28"). None are showing any stock right now (PWE is not showing up period). This has been my favorite size for thin, stock WB Scou...

Nothing will replace a person right there, but consider these sources as well: http://www.pinewoodderbyphysics.com/book-composition.shtml http://www.pinewoodphysics.com/ I have never seen the book in person, but its pretty well acclaimed. That site has a lot of free 'lectures' also. I have the video...

Re: Allow extended wheelbase?

All good comments so far. My only 2 cent contribution that I didn't see mentioned is "What is it that your district or council rules limit ?". If there is opportunity for Pack cars to move on to other levels, then it is certainly worth seeing what they restrict. For example, our Pack allow...
