Re: 2010 BSA kit changes
At today's weekly workshop, we had only two Cubs show up. However, both Cubs' kits, apparently purchased by the Pack in late 2012 from the local Scout Store, had old-style wheels. :/ One box was a 75th Anniversary, and immediately had me aware that the wheels in it were likely old. But the other one...

Re: Cutting cars by hand
Just finished our first workshop of the year. Not much turnout on a rainy day. But the Tiger that showed up wanted his car to have a certain design - and since I don't have a scroll saw or band saw, he cut it out with a miter saw, coping saw, and wood rasp (with, admittedly, some help from an adult ...

Re: Pinewood Derby Rules
FYI: we just opened registration for the Four Peaks District Pinewood Derby. http://www.grandcanyonbsa.org/event/1294447" target="_blank Although we received a lot of very useful feedback here, the decision is to leave the rules alone for now. But there is a possibility that detailed axle ...

Re: Pinewood Derby Rules
Don't have a lot of time for a response now, but I wanted to make a comment or two. First, thanks for the considerable "in-town" feedback. We weren't aware that San Tan was dealing with many of the same concerns (I've been trying to make contact with other Districts with mixed success). Th...

Re: 90 Days Left!
Our Pack received their cars at Monday evening's meeting, along with plan sheets they can use for design (available at http://www.richardcmoeur.com/cub/pinewooderbyplan.pdf" target="_blank ) Our Pack Derby isn't until March 2nd (as part of our spring campout at Pioneer Arizona History Muse...

Re: Wheels Rules
If you say "no purchased wheels", then that eliminates any official BSA wheels from the Scout Shop or hobby/craft stores (except for the exact four that came in the kit that I presume was given to the Cub). And if the Cub messes up his block & buys a replacement kit, he's now out of sp...

Re: Wheels Rules
It's clear that in the race between the rules & the vendors, the vendors will typically keep right up (even without graphite) ;) However, I would think that there's still merit in creating some sort of readily-measurable threshold, if for no other reason than to not put Cubs using stock wheels a...

Re: Wheels Rules
It looks like there is some conflating of rules sets here. Could get confusing.
I don't believe derbyrookie mentioned anything about axles in his posting - just wheels.

Re: Wheels Rules
When I was rewriting our Pack / District rules, I wanted to be reasonably sure that a "stock" wheel right out of the box or sleeve wouldn't be inadvertently out of spec (which was reported to have occurred at last year's District race). So, I bought (or had on hand) 44 US-made wheels from ...

Re: Pinewood Derby Rules
Mr. Pope: I think your comment on 1C raises some concern. What "racing team?" The parent and Cub, or the Den, or the Pack? And although you're correct that it may be rather difficult to enforce, there's nothing against the Cub Scout trying to improve the performance of the car between race...

Re: Pinewood Derby Rules
Thanks much for the feedback. We're just continuing the format from previous years. One four-lane high-quality track, with staggered rank times (Webelos II start checking in at 8:00 and begin racing at 9:00, Webelos I start check-in at 9:00 & start racing at 10:00, etc.) Based on my records, the...

Re: Pinewood Derby Rules
As I mentioned in another thread on tracks (and ways to damage them), I've been "volunteered" to co-chair our District Pinewood Derby. How did I happen to be placed into such an important position? Well, my son (then a Tiger Cub) won his Pack Pinewood Derby, and entered the District Derby....

Re: Track damage from Open Class cars?
We just heard from the Pack that owns the track, and they're OK with the following: - No taller than 4.5" - No heavier than 1 lb - No exposed metal except for axle heads - BSA wheels only - No combustion-based propulsion So, it looks like we'll have some "more than stock" categories i...

Re: Track damage from Open Class cars?
Thanks for the feedback.
Then for right now I think we're going to keep everything 7" x 2 3/4" & 5 ounces, even in Open Class, and we'll see how it works out.

Track damage from Open Class cars?
Hi! I'm new to the group, having been "volunteered" to co-chair our District Pinewood Derby (and the Pack's, of course). We're finalizing plans & rules for the District Derby. We're thinking about adding several levels of Open Class to increase registration revenue (and also because so...
