How do I run the race fairly?
Dan
A bit of background, please:
How many racers are to compete directly against each other?
Approx how much time do you set aside for each group?
How many "top places" need to be identified in each group?
How well matched are the two lanes on the track?

FIRST, SECOND, & THIRD
I have no clue about the lanes. Usually, the same car wins no matter which lane it is in.

Re: 2 Lane Track
Heat timing: Use PPN schedule. This assures same number of runs in each lane.
No Heat timing:
Comparable lanes:
Small number of racers: Use CPN schedule. (With PPN generator, enter odd number of racers, racing a bye if necessary. This establishes same number of races against each other racer and establishes that each match-up race on alternating lanes. If the lanes were not comparable, then a large number of ties in final standings would result.)
Large number of racers:
A. Use a PPN schedule to select finalists for a CPN final.
B. Use a multiple elimination, keyed to the number of final places to be determined. For instance, if you are giving 4 top-place trophies, then the elimination schedule should be at least quad-elim!.
Non-comparable lanes (i.e. for many heats, the lane determines the winner):
Each "heat" is actually two runs on alternating lanes. The winner is determined by which has the greatest winning margin. This is dicey, but can be done with acceptable accuracy by each judge recording the winning margins on separate paper, and then comparing the papers. (Some groups play the "best 2 out of 3" game, but that doesn't resolve the lane bias problem ... it still boils down to which racer gets the lane advantage.)
So, pick out the situation that fits your situation, then we can go into as much more detail as you need.

Re: 2 Lane Track
Well, we were typing away at the same time!
Given your parameters, I'd run the CPN (double round robin) option!
Resolve ties by head-to-head racing as described under non-comparable lanes.
Does that help?

Re: 2 Lane Track
CPN is the best type of chart produced by the PPN algorithm. It is implemented in some management software (e.g. Randy's) and for free at http://members.aol.com/standcmr/ppngen.html.Commander Dan wrote:What is a CPN?
Where do I find it?
If you have more than 2 in a group, be sure to set "number of cars" to an odd number (even if that means you must run a bye) and set "number of rounds" to one less than that. Chart from the web page will be labeled as "Complementary-Perfect". (If not, recheck the cars and rounds values.
