Good plan! If a person controls the speed of the gate opening, then there will be variances in the times measured, sometimes, in tenths of seconds.

Total tiem or average time should be equivalent, unless you have a rule that allows a car that is damaged by the track, track staff, or by another racer to compete based on his prior results. Then average is essential! I don't know how many do this, but it should be considered, at least!
