Derby Talk

Well I have decided as I have 11 and a half months to my next PWD that now is the time to start practicing my skills. I had a few left over blocks so I asked my son what we should make. So I bust out my coping saw and dremel. Then I notice, whoops forgot to leave a spot for the front axels No worries say I, we can make it a 3 wheelers

So I cut out a central hole for the front wheel. No sure why I decided to cut all the way through and not just cut up from the bottom. Also practiced using the dremel as a router...not so easy to do this free hand. The depth adjusting tools just makes it harder to see what you are doing.

Tried to throw in some bottle green paint like the old fashion coke bottles.
Had an extra wheel which made a perfect cap:

So not the best looking car but I am learning to use my dremel and lay down paint. Also toyed with painting the wheels. Next I need to buy some goodies and practice making a fast car...right after I make my daughter a pickle car

Even if it gets past the slot for the peg, it would not likely stay on the track. The front wheel would ride on top of the central guide rail. I've seen similar designs which roll off the track almost immediately.

Might make for a useful Super Track design!

It definitely wouldn't work on our track. The front wheel would drop into the slot for the starting "pins" (which are aluminum bars 1 inch wide), and the car wouldn't make it further than a few inches.

I've seen a number of kids come up with designs with a single centered front wheel. To meet our "must fit the track" rule, I've shown them how to rework the design to use two front wheels, supported by struts. The struts don't have to be very big, and you can paint them black so they disappear visually. The front of the car ends up shaped something like this:

I like how the extra wheel was used as the bottle cap...

Darin, thanks for the feedback. I have does this once for a carrotcar I made but this time I just forgot-too excited to bust out the Dremel I guess. Man that little tool si fun.
