Civil War car in progress
Civil War car in progress
So here is the Civil War car I have been working on. After making some funny shaped cars I am practicing speed tips from DT.
Got a Max V body, painted half blue and half grey. Did a little metallic blue under the blue and metallic silver under the gray for some shine. Found some flag decals on-line. Can you see where I shaved the body for the DFW?
Decided to paint some flames to symbolized the destruction of war (who says pineheads can't be philosophical )
You can see from the box that I practiced painting first.
Classic hotrod paint job: white to yellow to orange to red.
Next I plan to take another stencil of a thin flame, cut it down the center and flames the sides. See if I can match the nose up right with the right color. Got some styling blue wheels. Will keep you posted.

Re: Civil War car in progress
those flames are hot!!!
How did you make the stencil?
Re: Civil War car in progress
WI,
This one I bought. (derby evolution) I made some others when I practiced but I wanted this one to be nice. I also tried Darin's tip here too. In stead of leading with my base paint on the stencil (I could not as my base was two toned) I stared with clear to "seal" and leak under the stencil.
Did another thin stencil on the side that did not work out. Will post photos and discuss what I likely did wrong.

Very nice. The theme is great.
Re: Civil War car in progress
Well, I had to add more flames and I think my failure may be instructive to others. I bought a centerline flame stencil and cut it in half to put flames along the sides of the car:
As you can see the flames peeled off with the stencil, but where it worked it looked pretty cool
This is likely what I did wrong. From speaking with Speedster, I should have roughed up the clear coat (over the blue and gret base) with either a scotch pad or fine wet sanding. Next I laid the paint on too thick. In my defense I had to cover over dark blue, so I put on 2 coats of orange before blending in my white, yellow and red. (the blending can add a lot of paint too) Not sure how I would have gotten around this expect by buying an airbrush and putting on several thin coats of lacquer based paint. (maybe Santa will bring one...after the drill press and band saw ) I was using Rustoleum brand enamel paint.
So I am sanding off the side flames and will stick with blue and gray. I am sure it was some wise dude who said that we learn more from our failures than our successes.

Even with the mishaps, this theme car is impressive.
Does that Union flag have 50 stars? That can't be period accurate!Noskills wrote:Found some flag decals on-line.

FS,
Good eye. Busted. I did not even look for period America flag decals and I am not at the point of making custom decals yet.

Re: Civil War car in progress
Very cool for sure. I of course like the flame stencil, but not because it came from me. I am into painting flames on cars, I like the old school hot rods with flames.
The error could have been from either putting the paint on to thick or not scuffing the surface. It seems that you certainly are on the right track with the paint jobs and the color fade you did was great. Keep up the cool paint jobs.

Re: Civil War car in progress
Thanks all.
I plan to give this car to our committee chair as he is a Civil War fan too. I will try to convince him to race in next year in a "beat the chair" race. Its should be fairly fast as I followed the advice on DT yet I dont get the feeling that is will be super fast. This car was all about learning and having fun. I really like the painting-reminds me of the art I used to do as a kid. Now if I find out the car is fast I will look into changing my screen name on DT
Also did anyone notice the tiny notch in the nose of the car? That's my idea to help the stager line up the front of the car. Maybe it will help.
