In The Rumble Seat!

Post by whodathunkit »

Here is one I started today it's a 1929 Ford Roadster with fenders & a Rumble seat.

Just building this one for fun to see if I can & what it will turn out looking like.
So far it has been a fun little project building this Roadster.
Here it is with almost all the pieces cut.. and a little bit of the sanding work started.

To give you all an idea of what it looks like so far..

FS, if you're looking about.. Hope you'll like the roadster.

Mark, very cool. Keep us posted. For us in Virginia who have work benches in the garage it's too hot to do anything!

Ha ha! very funny Seth,
Your not kidding about this heat wave. It's allready a 102 degrees here in the Panhandle of Okla.
And it's a good thing that my 6 car garage basement/workshop that's built into an embankment,
stays cool with out any a/c running in it ..
The two story A-frame house that sets above it is hard to heat in the winter.. but not to bad.
Come on over Seth.. And will share some Coke sodas..
& I'll let you paint up some Flames on this Hot Rod.

Day two of this 1929 Ford (Roaster) build. Hope it looks Hot. Pun intended!
Side view with the fenders glued on and it's setting heighth.
Image
It's length is just a touch under 7in long.

Wish me luck with that rattle can paint handle.. going to paint this one black with red leather seats.
But before I do start painting just seen a few spots in my photos.. that need a little more sanding.

Well as you can see from my Ford motor co. thermometer it's not that hot in my grarage &
Just about the right temp to paint with the grarage doors open.

Here's a close up just after spraying the clear gloss and putting it back in the paint stand to dry.

hope it will turn out looking good when the clear gloss dries.

I'm no pro at this painting bit.. But thank you Lead Reindeer.
The paint job has a few flaws in it but all in all it turned out looking good.

Kinda getting a later start on working on it some more tonight.. I decided to paint the frame chrome,
& put some door handles on the car as well.
I still have some more detail work to do to it like headlight and tail lamps etc.
Here it is with the frame painted.
Image
And a side view of what little work i've done to the car tonight showing the door handles
and dash work.. painted it red with gauges and chrome trim work as well.
Image
Well that view didn't show a very good view of the dash here is a better photo of it.
I'm planing on making a gas cap to put on the rumble seat so that the trunk lid can be lifted off and put in as the seat.
Image
Front view of the roadster.

As you can all see i've still got alot of work to do on it.. But it has been a really fun project car so far.
Thanks Guys!

Well guys here it is all done up for now.

I put the head lights on & done up the tail lights with a hand painted car tag.

I wanted to use the Aluminum star hubs that Max-v sales to put on his wheels ( just for looks.)
But just my luck they are to big to fit down inside the rims of his wheels, like thay do on the BSA wheels.
Image

Anyway here it is and the look I was hopeing for.. the aluminum hubs are just hanging on the axel heads for these photos .

Anyway.. I wish you all good luck on your next PWD projects.

Thanks Darin,

Pulled the aluminum wheel hub covers.. it's to bad they didn't fit down into the rims of the new
Max-v wheels, thats how it go's sometimes when your building for looks.. or that show car look.

However thanks to alot of the painting tips as well as the rest of the speed tips..
I do feel all of you on DT, Helped me to build one of the best looking project cars i'v built so far.

I know FS, Was hopeing for that Tom Slick Thunderbolt grease slapper car.
However..Toms car looks like a 1929 Ford Roadster to me. ;)

Wow, Mark. Impressive work. What did you use for the steering wheel? Is it something you made or something you bought? Growing up, my grandfather had a pinewood derby car that had a rumble seat in it. I don't believe it was made to represent any specific model, but your roadster made me think of it. The car is probably 40+ years old now. One of these days I'll have to check with him to see if he still has it and see if I can get some pictures of it.

In addition to Ballboy's question about the steering wheel, I was wondering what was "under the hood" -- literally. Was that a solid piece of wood or hollowed out? The inside shape was not clear from the photos.

Ballboy & FS, the steering wheel in this car is from one of those BSA accessories kit.
Thought it looked better then makeing one from copper wire.
Every thing else on the car is all made from wood guys.

FS, the hood on this car is hollowed out just as you thought .
The grill & radiator coil are also two parts.. the coil insets into the grill and the back is sanded smooth
so it will cover up the hollowed up hood.
As for what under the hood--literally. (air!) you know you dont need motors..just lots of weight in the car in the right places.

Thanks Ballboy,
Glad the Roadster made you think of your Grandfathes pinewood derby car with a rumble seat as well.
I truely hope you will post some photos of his Impressive work.
As I would enjoy seeing it.. I'm crazy over the vintage cars. ;)
