Tungsten Puma Weighta
Re: Tungsten Puma Weighta
The biggest problem I see is if someone installed 1.8 gram wheels on the rear. I'm going to try to add to our rules requiring all original lettering on the wheels be visible. I should then be able to feel the ridge.

Yes. I agree.Speedster wrote:The biggest problem I see is if someone installed 1.8 gram wheels on the rear. I'm going to try to add to our rules requiring all original lettering on the wheels be visible. I should then be able to feel the ridge.
Lightningboy is a big fan of the Northern Star Council rules, and these rules make sense to me.
The lightened wheel is the best advantage a builder could have.
Especially important is where the wheel is lightened from.
I have heard that the car will only travel as fast as the slowest wheel will allow it though.
Not a challenge to the rules, just thossing out some conjecture.
Thanks,

Joe,
Thanks for the new version of your cub scout puma weights to try out.
I like what you have done with the weights.
Whoda.

What type of automobile can be spelled the same forwards & backwards?
Re: Tungsten Puma Weighta
Where is the best place to purchase a couple of sets these new version weights forr testing? Our rules require sight of the letter on the inside as China wheels are deemed illiegal.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Tungsten Puma Weighta
I have a set of the original weights, but not the new ones. With the old weights, you couldn't cant the wheels without contacting the weight. It looks like the same issue exists with the new weights. How do you cant the rear wheels while using the Puma Weights?

Re: Tungsten Puma Weighta
Randy,
After one drills axle holes for the cant angles or is useing bent axles and axle slots.
You could bevel the area on the car block to match the cant angles..
so that the weights would match as well when glued on to the car body.
It might be harder to do with a thicker car body though or to see the lettering inside the wheels
if one is useing a thicker body car and the new Cub version weights as well.
So there is a draw back to useing the new Cub version weights with a thicker car body.
And by covering the wheels up top side of the car..
so that the inspector cant see the lettering inside the wheels.

I agree with Mark. I have done something g similar with a fender on the DFW. I sand the area in front of the wheel so the fender matches the cant. Same concept for Puma weight.

Question about Tungsten Puma Weights
How do folks set the wheel gap on wheels that have Puma weights installed? I don't see how you could use a gap gauge with the weights glued onto the car body.

Re: Question about Tungsten Puma Weights
Pretty much just eyeball it. You should be able to see from the cutback side how close your gaps are. Get them as tight as you can without touching the body and you will be fine. I am sure you could also take a business card and cut just a strip out and snake it in. I don't have a set to verify though.

I don't like to cross-post, but I don't know how much traffic the Trading Post section gets, so....
I have a set of the original design of the Puma weights for sale.

With the older version puma weight you might try this!
Let the iner hub tuch the car body use a sharpe & mark the top side of the weight..
useing the iner rim of the wheel.
Measure out the wheel gap you want mark it.. and re-install the wheel and set the nail head to hold
the iner rim of the wheel to the wheel gap marked out.
Keep in mind from the hub to the rim on a stock wheel your looking at 0.045 inches.
Same could be done for the newer version weights as well.

Re: Tungsten Puma Weighta
I have another post related to this ( http://www.derbytalk.com/viewtopic.php? ... 153#p76153 ) but in case you are wondering, here is a picture of my son's car with puma weights on it and the COM can be set under 0.5 inches if we so want it to, which is less than the radius of the puma weights. If he rests the car body on a thin edge just in front of the weights, it tips backwards. We are going to have to measure it differently to figure it out. Note that he has 10 cubes behind the rear axle and will need another 3 somewhere in front (we haven't decided where yet) to reach 5 oz.
Re: Tungsten Puma Weighta
Hi David,
If it were my car, I think I would put the 3 remaining cubes in front of the Axle line biased more on the steering side of the car.
Best of luck with the race,
Joe Puma
