Sally - From the movie cars - UPDATED PICTURES! FINAL RESULT
My daughter (now 4) wants to do Sally from the movie cars. A 911 may sound simple enough to make but in reality there is little that makes her unique which to me makes her hard to create since you can't just slap decals on a block of wood and it somewhat looks like what you intended. This gave me a challenge, and I like PWD design challenges.
I am not done yet but here is where I am now.
NEW PICTURES OF BODY COMPLETED: These pictures were taken with my phone; I'll try to get some better pictures posted sometime. As you can see the paint came out pretty good, but I am most impressed by the decals. They are all made from scratch in photoshop and printed on Testor's water-slide decal paper, but the impressive part is now it wrapped around a domed surface of the windshield and did not wrinkle. I was expecting to have to put up with some wrinkling on the edges but it fit contoured perfectly! Bonus!
First step. Plan, fender holes, glue, clamp
Step two. Draw profile on side and top.
Step three. Cut and sand.
Step four. Hope it all looks right when put together.
Step five. Fill the joints as needed.
I do now have the first coat of primer on and see that I have my work cut out for me finishing the wood before any more painting. I'll keep you posted.

I'm waiting for him to recreate the rest of the cast and make a sequel.

The first car we made was Lightening McQueen a few years ago but since that was the first car, it does not hold up the new par.I'm waiting for him to recreate the rest of the cast and make a sequel.
I really wanted to make a Mater this year since I have yet to see one that has impressed me, but he didn't make the cut this year. Maybe next year.

If yer gonna do Mater next year it would be a good excuse to buy and air brush to get the finish just right...

As expected you are making it look way too easy. Would you just struggle a bit please? I am looking forward to seeing your finished product, your paint is always among the best. I have considered doing mater as well, just have not gotten there with it yet. I had also thought about doing a junk heap of a car, go to the complete other perspective, dented, bad paint, rusty, crunched hood, hanging doors, etc. You project looks great so far, nice work.

You are a pinewood master, I kneel to your greatness, I need to learn your painting techniques, more specifically, your masking technique, because you don't seem to have bleed issues under your masks. You are the man.

there is no masking. all the windows and lights are home made in photo shop with water slide decal paper.
Good finishes only come from priming and sanding and repeating until it is perfect.

She looks great. Did you use any setting solution or solvent on the decals?

That paper has the adhesive on it. If you have ever made a model kit, it is the same stuff that the decals are. You cut out the decal, put it in lukewarm water for 10-20 second then place it on a paper towel for 10 second, then it will slide easily off the backing onto the car. I also wet the car so I can slide it into position easier. once it is in position I dab it dry with a paper towel. It is pricey but turns out great. I paid $15 for 5-5.5x8.5 sheets of it at Hobby Lobby. Great stuff though. Made by testors.

Re: Sally - From the movie cars - UPDATED PICTURES!!!
I was referring to products like Microsol and Microset. Between them, they pretty much dissolve the decal and allow it to snuggle down over compound curves, raised details and the like. When building models, they result in decals looking like they were painted on, even over raised rivets on armor, panel lines on aircraft or the complex shapes of racing cars.
