Just because your boys are off to Boy Scouts doesn’t mean you will be escorted out of DerbyTalk. You can still come back and look, and maybe even build something and race it. You’re never too old for pinewood derby (well at least I’m not).
Cool cars, and great Big Rig!

Re: One Last Go At It ...
Thanks! ah8tk, after 11 years, my wife is looking forward to getting her dinning table back in December/January! One thing that I never get to do is to make Lightning McQueen that you sent me ... but thanks for sharing. I knew that I forgot to thank a whole bunch of folks like Sporty, ah8tk, my hometown SHAC competitor (bigTex), ..., and the rest of you DTB posters!
There have been 8 years worth of green horns whom I have helped and even helped to win the Pack, not to mention from other packs as well! There have been 8 pack workshops and 6 extra help workshop at my house. Even after I am not in the Pack, my Tips and Tricks booklet will continue to make sure that the kids and their parents will have some of what my sons and I learned. Everyone here needs to vow to help every kids with their car. Let's not let a single kid sees his/her car makes it 1/2 down the track and stops! It happened to my oldest 11 years ago when he was a tiger and that is not something that should happen to a 7 years old (or any age). Please make sure that every car should have the same minimum factors that would enable it to finish the race! As for making them competitive, that's where we should teach them the skills and theories and let them decide if they want to go after it ... and Stan always advocates! As any good pinewood racers, they don't die off. They just lurk in the background and help that one cub scout to create the "Fluke!"
I may come back just to do a quick Outlaw or Open, but I have a large troop (80+ ... possibly 100+ after this February) to look after!
... we checked 'em in ... we will race 'em next weekend. I will let y'all know the results!
Thanks again

Hate to see you move on OneHour - IMO your DT handle has been one of the most clever!OneHour wrote:after 11 years, my wife is looking forward to getting her dinning table back in December/January! ...
The chrome work on Big Rig especially impresses me. Are the pieces from a model kit, a toy, or something else? And how did you paint the rims?
Re: One Last Go At It ...
The cab is from a toy truck that my youngest no longer play with (I hope ). It happens to fit perfectly on the pine that has the axles. I used silver Sharpie to color in the hubs. The logs are 3/4" wooden dowels, stained with left over oak stain that I have. Only the ouside logs are full-length (8") the rest are about 2" long. The weights are inside the logs. This rig took me the least amount of time to put together and probably the best looking one eventhough I cheated! With my luck with rigs, it will be a dog in terms of speed. Oh well, at least I had fun!
Re: One Last Go At It ...
We ran our race yesterday. We came out ok.
My youngest's car (Mario) avg was 2.952 second with the fastest time was 2.938 second. The closest car to him was 2.9915 sec. avg. Even my Outlaw cars (avg 2.97) couldn't match it! It was truly a Fluke and he did 80 percent of the car! Super proud Dad I am indeed!
So overall, the we did ok.
- Youngest got 1st Overall out of 60 cars.
- He also got 1st in design in his category.
- My Green Lantern finished 1st in the Open Class Adult race (avg 2.983 sec).
- My Woody Wood Pecker finished 2nd (avg. 2.974 sec) while my returning champ (avg. 2.97 sec) was able to defend its title for the 4th year in the Outlaw Class.
- My Logger got the most votes from the audience for Most Favorite Rig.
- It also finished 1st in the single elimination races.
Our swan song is completed.
Again, thank YOU, my friends on DT! I'll catch y'all on the scouting trails!
