Son wins, Last race

Post by sporty »

My son won Webelo 2, council race.

Was pretty fun for him.

As we noticed when the car was waiting for the finals, his left front axle was loose, had a big gap.

And me and him talked about it. We decided run it first and if you do not get 1st. then to push it in.

So he runs his first finals race and gets 2nd place. Before I could even look at him, he was already fixing the axle gap on the car.

And it worked, he went on to win the next to races to take 1st place !

What a awesome 5 years it has been for me and my youngest son.

The past 5 years, he has won every pack race and set 4 track pack records.

He has won council 4 times, four: 1st places and one: 2nd place at council. the past 5 years.

Today we got to meet Knotthead from Derbytalk. Was nice meeting him and his family. And congrats on a 2nd place council win !

Congrats on the win. I think it's great when a scout knows how to troubleshoot their own car to get it to go faster. Well done.

CONGRATULATIONS, Sporty, to you and your son, Sean. What an IMPRESSIVE record !!!!

I have stared at his beautiful car, and the wheels, for about 5 minutes. It appears the rear wheels are straight up and down, the right front wheel has negative camber, and the left front wheel has positive camber and is actually towed out. Is this at all possible or is it simply the way the picture appears to me? Taking 1st place with a loose axle tells me I still have a lot to learn.
Once again, CONGRATULATIONS !!!!
Cheers

These are 4 on the floor rules.

We ran about 1.2 degrees on the rears.

the right dom wheel had about 1 degree, opposite cant then the rears and toe in.

The toe in was about 1 1/4 inches at 4 feet. drift.

the left wheel has toe out, about 1 inch at 4 feet. drift. This is non dom wheel Just touches.

We used the sporty bore prep process on the wheel bores, hodges for burnish and hobb-e-lube.

The axle heads were not coned or anything. no material allowed to be removed from the hub per rules.

Hub's were polished with micro mesh and that was done with small piecesof the micro mesh glued onto a end of a cut q-tip, different grits, and then hodges rubbed onto it.

Aron,
Perhaps it was a rough track or the axle had Micro Vibrations that Sporty Talks about.
Or the Wheel took a hard hit in the stoping pit. that FS Talks about.
Or perhaps the axel was not glued in good.. or it was missed.. or loosend in the tuneing of
that wheel.

I've had this very thing happen to one of my cars also.

Where you going to keep all those trophies ???!!!

Congrats again ! Great way to finish. Expect some strange feelings next year when you don't have a car in the race. I am sure you will be involved somehow though.

Thanks all.

The car sat sealed in a box for 3 months, before being opened up in front of the inspectors on race day. the rules require this.

The wheel looked good then.

The feel the stop section was likely the culprit. But also the left non dom wheel, as I mentioned has toe out. So it could have also caused it to loosen up, along with a stop section / a few ruff hits.

It could have happened at the pack race, but not loosened the wheel axle up yet either.

Just glad my son resolved the issue and was able to win again.

When the graphite is gone out of the car, and thats what you have when you get to the finals. what is left is the axle prep work, wheel bore work and alignment.

The previous year, we ran coaches secret lube, This year, just ran what we usually did.
