Strykker RR 2013

Post by tmack »

Never posted pics before, hope this works!

Below is my son's 2013 RR car. He dubbed it "Strykker"
The design was based off of very good advice/tips from John4840

We followed John's advice to the letter for the most part:
• ¼” board—closer to 3/8”,,, ¼” made my nervous
• Swapped ¼” length from back to front
• Used 2.5 oz tungsten canopy ($$$ the pain on the wallet)
• Used about 1.5oz of tungsten putty underneath. ($$$ the pain on the wallet)..car weights 4.99 oz
• Both rear and DFW axles are bent to 2.5deg.
• The COM is around 5/8”
• Drift is set to about 3" over 4ft

Cool looking car. Why did you not go with the 3.5 oz canopy? Perhaps you didn't know you would need so much putty.

LOL, that is alot of putty huh? We saw the 3.5s but decided not to deviate from John's design.
We got a 5/8 COM so we were happy! Maybe next year we will try the 3.5....that tungsten aint cheap! :O

Nice car!

Can I ask how you created the pockets in the bottom of your car for the weight?

When I do this, I use my forstner bits in a drill press and drill a series of holes. I have a router, but using the drill press just seems easier.

The problem I have is that my forstner bits have a "pointed tip" at the end of each one, which goes beyond the flat part of the bit. Thus, whenever a hole is drilled, I end up with tiny "points" in the bottom of the hole. This means I cannot go as deep as I'd sometimes like to without poking through the top of the car.

It looks like you used a similar method, but I don't see the point marks. Do they make forstner bits (or some other bit type) without the pointy ends?
What type of bit bit you use?

We used a drill press with a router bit...seemed to work ok. Tommy worked the press up/down while I held the car. The car would jerk erratically since the bit wasn't really meant for this. Not saying it was dangerous...but you had to be on your toes and hold the car real tight for each plunge of the bit.

Seem's like I said that very same thing while posting my first pics also.

The Strykker car looks cool guys.

I can think of one John 4840... tip you kinda forgot about!

I love minimalist designs like this! I’m always on the lookout for them when helping out in a derby workshop and you don’t have the time or tools to do a complex design. I’d love to add your son’s car to my “ideas book.”

My boys like them, too, because to them they're fast.

Hey tmack, did your son make the district race last Saturday? john4840 and I were keeping our eyes out for you. Would have been nice to see you there.

Maybe you can make it to next year's Pinewood Derby Fun Day. It will likely be either Jan 4th or 11th, 2014. Keep your eyes peeled for it! :D

Hey Shawn, John
Yep were where there, Tommy took 3rd! Car 67. We were very pleased. Thanks goes out to all the DT folks, especially John for letting us steal his design lol.
We were nervous after having to replace the DFW after enduring some very bad track joints at the pack race.

Shawn, if you could, could you post the top five times? They usually display the top five times for us dads to write down but I dont think they did that this time for some reason. When I saw that 2.85s from your son I knew we were in trouble lol. Tommy's car was consistent 2.88, 2.88, 2.89.....congrats to you and your son!

Did I hear you right? 8"/4' drift? wow! now thats amazing!.....and what a risky move that paid off!

Tmack -- congrats on your son getting 3rd. Out of 70, that's terrific!

Here are the times you asked for:

The first five places had the following times:

Lane1, Lane2, Lane3, Total
2.888, 2.859, 2.863, 8.610
2.890, 2.875, 2.877, 8.642
2.888, 2.885, 2.899, 8.672
2.905, 2.899, 2.883, 8.687
2.902, 2.905, 2.908, 8.715

Avg times
2.998, 2.993, 2.993, 8.984

No one had a DNF or needed "help" to cross the line, so the averages are valid.

Your son actually had the exact same time as mine in Lane 1, and that was the best time of the day for that lane.

Nice going! :bigups:

Tom congrats to your son on 3rd place, he made a very nice looking fast car!!

Definitely buy a 3.5 ounce canopy for next year. The triangle canopy we used last year was a close out special from Max V which save us little bit of money and gave us a different look, but we had to add some cubes to make up the difference in weight. If we had to do it over again we have bought the 3.5 ounce canopy, I believe it would have made my son's car a bit more stable.
