1957 Triumph TR-3 Thanks to FIRENZE.

Post by whodathunkit »

Some time back on this topic:
http://www.derbytalk.com/viewtopic.php? ... eek#p65319" target="_blank
Tom Tyson, ..FIRENZE.. shared some photos of some Triumph cars with me.

I was hopeing to see him share some of his build photos that he talked about for makeing one of these cars.
But it was the photos he shared with me on that topic.. that gave me the inspiration
to try and build one of my first Triumph cars.

Tom.. Thank You for the Inspiration.

Here is how my first 1957 Triumph TR-3 turned out.

As you can see a few of the details on the car are a little off .. but not to shabby.

Whoda.

Mark,
Love the finish. Its like metallic teal. Also was the grill made separately? I think you have perfected PDW wheel painting too.

Very nice!

Thanks Seth,

The grill was made separatly on the scroll saw cutting small boxes out..
Trying to make the grill fens stand out.
Just one of the little details I got wrong was not insetting the fens in the grill..
& the grill into the front.

But hay.. it was my frist attempt at this car.

As for the wheel spoke painting.. Thanks! ;)
But I'll have you know.. I'm my own worst critic..
and fell I still have a need to improve with useing a brush to paint the spokes with.

Great looking car. Do you have photos showing how that little beauty went together? Did you design this on paper before you start cutting any wood? How many hours did you have in building this car?

Speedster, I'm sorry I did not take any photos of how I cut the car out
or how the car was put together befor the paint.
I did take a few photos showing a few of the detals I added to the car after painting
while it was still in the derby guys paint stand that I have.

I did draw the car out on graph paper useing it as my pattern..
and I would take a photo of the pattern to share with you.

My wife has the camera right now..
School Music Teacher & the kids had there Christmas play last night..
and you know how the photos are important for the school year books.
I'll have to get the camera back from her..
after she gets the photos loaded on to her computer at school for the year book.
So I can post a photo of the pattern.

I wasen't keeping track of just how many hours it took to build the car.
But as a guess I'd say the hours were somewhere around 16 hours or more
for this build.
Just getting to work on it for a few hour after work for 4 days.

Speedster,
I'll be working on makeing a 1936 Triumph Roadster..
for next Triumph car build.. some time after the new year.
I'll see what I can do about getting you some build photos posted of this car.

Speedster,
Here you go for the pattern.. I know that I said used graph paper to draw out the car on.
I did use it for makeing the first car pattern on.. I have sence trashed it and tossed the trash out.

Anyway here is how I make up my own car patterns most of the time anyway.
Image
Starting on blank paper drawing around the kit block.. the red ink shows the block..
the black ink shows the car and cut pieces.
For makeing this car you can see from the pattern the front end is now the back end of the block.
Note: in the car photos FIRENZE has posted.. how much longer back fenders are.
Then what is seen on the car shown in my pattern...
Okay.. I Know your saying you can not change the axle slot location.
I dident if you'll Note from the kit box rules.. That 7" is "only" the max length for the car..
And that you don't have to use the max length.. so long as the stock wheel base to make the car stays the same..
That the front bumper now makes up for.

However for the car seen in the photos I'v posted.. I did not use the saw cut axle notches..
For makeing the car & that I drilled axle holes in the stock axle location and cut an end off.
Image
I then sliced the block to 1/2" thick useing it for the frame and the rest of the block..
to make the hood and trunk and door panels.
If you'll be asking me.. if the hood and trunk areas were hollowed out as well.. yes.
AND so was the frame under them ..but leaveing some wood to the under side of the frame ..
so there are no open holes under the car.
Next the fenders were made from scrap wood..
Image
Seats.. grill.. Windshild.. bumpers & so on.
So as you can see from the pattern..
If you don't like or wish.. to build the car with a front bumper..
all's you'll need to do is to lengthen the trunk & the back fenders to make it fit
the full 7" block..
To make it look like blue race car seen in FIRENZE Photos with out any bumpers.

Anyway.. Speedster, I wanted this one to have a front bumper on it.
And yes the back end axle to the car end is only off by 1/8"
As so are most kit block axle notches anyway They dont always get them dead on anyhow.

Whoda.

Whoda, you might consider putting pictures of your builds on a disc. I hope someday your cars find their way to a museum. Beautiful work.

Thanks Speester,
Maybe some day the cars will.. But right now I'm happy with the kids..
just getting to see some of the cars I'v built down at my local Scout & Outdoor shop.
And some of the car builds I've posted here on DerbyTalk as well.

The best part is that DT is also like a museum for me..
Because..I also get to see some very sharp looking cars built by kids from all over the map..
& some very nice car builds by adults as well. ;)

I'm hopeing this car will be a fun build with just a little bit of that show car look as well.
As this one will be built useing the stock axle slots & have moveing body parts..
I'm hopeing to make the doors on the car open and close as well.

Thanks Laserman,
I haven't forgot about building the 1936 Triumph Roadster.
So I guess I better make this the next car on my list to share some build photos of.

Hope to see some more of your work as well.

Mark.

If it's ok by Gpraceman,
I'll just add some build photos of the 1936 Triumph Dolomite Roadster... (to this topic!)
instead of starting a new one for the car.
