LightninBoy 2014 Scout Cars

Post by LightninBoy »

I've got two in scouts this year, a Webelo and a Lion. Here's is the Webelo's car, he calls it "Scorpio"

And here is the Lion's car which he calls "Marvel Mobile"

Both cars are fast. They took 1st (Marvel Mobile) and 2nd (Scorpio) by a good margin at the pack race last night. The "Marvel Mobile" in particular was just an absolute rocket until it lost its DFW wheel on a run (brutal stop section). I was able to stick it back in and get the steer close enough for its last heat - so all was ok. I just hope I can dial it in like it was in time for districts cause it was unbelievably fast.

Sweet looking cars. Is that monokote? Self sticking or ironed. Stock wheels or do your rules allow you do modify? Lastly I am guessing you son is a Tiger not a Lion. I think they had lions scouts in the 50s.

Actually, Lion is a new rank before Tigers they're doing a test run of through next year. It's being done by Northern Star Council in Minnesota and a small section of Wisconsin. Very cool!

And congrats on the cars!

The rank of Lion was discontinued in 1967.

Neat. Technically, the rank appears to be Lion Cub. (Although, the badge illustration shows an adult mane!)

yep, monokote trim, which is the stick on kind. The wheels cannot be lightened, but there are several allowed modifications such as coming hubs.

I had no idea the lion rank was unique to our council. Well, learned something new!!

Had a good night at districts.

Scorpio took 1st overall in the district race. Another car that I helped with took 2nd overall.

Marvel Mobile was the 4th overall fastest car and that was good for 1st in the Lion Cub den. However, on its first run it posted the single fastest time of the night before suffering a spectacular crash in the stop section. Its subsequent runs were all .05 seconds slower. Turns out the DFW was knocked partially out and toed-out instead of toed in. So it was rail riding on the lifted wheel. Crazy.

Anyways, here are the spoils for both district and pack ...

Kind of a funny story ...

After the cars dominated the pack race, a high schooler (who built a car and ran in the sibling group) came up to me and asked: "I have to know - what's the secret with the yellow wheel?"

For a moment, I pondered making up something elaborate, but he was so sincere I couldn't bring myself to do it. So I told him the truth ... we use junk wheels for the lifted wheel and this year they happen to be yellow. I never really thought much about it.

But I wonder if next year I'll see a bunch of cars running with one yellow wheel at the pack race. ;-)

Cool car's there LightninBoy!
And Congrats on the wins at district.

After trying the iron on monokote for the frist time.. and haveing more rinkles in it then ever.
That stick on monokote is looking good.

Have you ever tryed useing..Automotive lens lite repair self adhesive films on a car?

I picked up some today for a makeshift red cover on a mini cooper car I've been working on.
It worked really well covering the top side.
I don't know if the lens repair film is lighter then the monokote or not but it's really thin stuff.

And oh.. the yellow wheel thing..Man!! ;)

Whoda.

Thanks whoda and everyone.

No I haven't tried the lens film. Never heard of it so thanks for the heads up! I'm always looking for ways to avoid paint. ;-)
