Mid America Builds Almost Finished

Post by birddog »

We are cutting it a bit close this year with a bit of a late start, but got the cars laid out and axle holes drilled last night. Hope to make big progress this weekend.

Planning on running "hershey bar" shaped cars this year.

The finished car is the one I ran in our adult division of the pack race this year. Using it as a model for the mid america builds.

Mike,
Straying from the "dog bone". Big move. How did you like making those fenders? They look good.

Fenders are still a work in progress for me. We built two cars for my son and the one without fenders was faster, so we went with that. I built one car and enjoyed fiddling with the fenders, but not sure if they gave me any speed advantage given how I implemented them.

I have no doubt that fenders done right will lead to greater speed, doing them right is the trick.

We are going to try some pre-made fenders this time around and see how that works. I may even do a test run without the fender and then add the fenders to see if anything changes. We'll see how much time I have to play as the deadline is looming!

4 cars primed and 1st coat of paint. My daughter ended up not wanting a hershey bar shaped car, so we reverted to the dog bone at the last minute. Her car is planned to be powder blue with pink stripes.

Son and I are planning to do photo-shop'd stickers for the tops of our hershey bars.

1st coat of paint done. Hopefully 3 will be enough. Then clear coat. I'll post the finished result.

I wish I were building Mid-America cars this year, but I have to sit it out. Too many other things going on. Next year, though!

Cars are now assembled and finished. All that is left is tuning, adding final weight and testing. Hope to be done and ready to ship by Thursday.

Note that the little pony car is not my daughters car, it is my son's graphite car. My daughter is the Green Bay Packer fan.

Yes, they are.

Too many cars and too little time to make my own this time around.

Birddog,

Fenders are very time consuming. I have found a catch-22 as well. They are very hard to hold in your hand to shape as they get small. To avoid this, glue them in place while bulky and sand while attached to the car. The problem here is if you want the fender to align with the wheel the car needs to be tuned so you have the DFW [junk] cant angle. Cannot place the fender very close to the DFW then hope to twist and turn it later as the wheel will hit the fender.

Fun conundrum.....

Very nice looking car builds there birddog,

So tell us.. are you hopeing to see some
Instant speed gains of up to 0.15 of a secound and about 1/3 car lenth just from installing
the GEE fenders?

Cool looking space age stuff these fenders are made of.
What type of automobile can be spelled the same forwards & backwards?
