Team Scrollsawer Line-Up 2015 (Race Results Added)

Post by Scrollsawer »

(Times added below. The Pack winner averaged a pretty slow time of 3.02 seconds, which based on some of our cars's times below, we could have easily beaten. But my boy wanted to do a pig car, so we went with that and happily gave up winning speed for fun design in the Scout Division. Besides, the family that did win 1st in Pack this year had never beaten us before, and had been gunning for us for the past three years, so they were pretty elated to have finally summited the mountain ahead of us. We were happy to have them take home the big trophy before thier son graduated out of Cub Scouts. I'm pretty sure that with enough time to properly tune and test and dial in alignment, that we could get that pig's time down to around 3.03 or so. If we had canted the rears to 2.5-3 degrees instead of 1.5, we would likely have picked up even more speed, but I'd already drilled the axle holes before he changed his mind and announced that he wanted to try and make the pig fast.)

After a somewhat hectic day spent deburring and polishing axles, prepping wheels, opening up axle holes that were too small, drilling glue holes, buffing contact surfaces with graphite, etc., etc., etc.,

I present to you, Team Scrollsawer - 2015!

2nd PLACE WEBELOS (3.05 seconds) 'When Pigs Fly' (aka 'The Baconator') - (Webelos Division)

We made the 'weigh-in' with 20 minutes to spare. Really cut it close this year. Too close, in fact. Race Day is Saturday Evening. (Today). Hope you like the pics.

Thanks guys! Will let you know how it turns out.

BTW, I love how the specks of graphite dotting the pig car body work out. Gives it a perfect dirty 'pig sty' look.

We spent a lot of time working on the BSA axles out of the box. Only sanded to 2500 grit, but went through 8 different grades/wet sands to get there, after de-burring the nails with a file. Definitely had a mirror finish on the contact surfaces.

Novus 2 and 1 on the wheels. Drilled mildly canted holes (5.25" wheelbase) including the DFW. Then burnished with Hob-e-Lube on all contact surfaces.

Will do. Usually takes a few days to get a soft-copy of the race results from the man who administers the race. Times were pretty slow this year. I think the Scouts capped out at a Pack-winning speed of 3.02 seconds. Not sure what the open speeds were, but I'm curious to see how my spoon car did.

Thought I'd post a hardware pic.

Had a great time at our last Derby. Already seriously thinking about entering a few cars in the Mid-America in April. Will post times, once we get them from the race administrator. No time was recorded for the 'Cub Scout Spirit' car as we designed it to die halfway down the track. We did not want to risk losing a chance at his Design Award goal by recording any speed times (per recommendation from Darin McGrew. Mission Accomplished.

Congratulations on achieving your goals for the race! I would have enjoyed seeing that piggy fly down the track. Any video, perchance?
