Stretched frame pusher axle Peterbilt.

Post by whodathunkit »

Ah, Speedster! What's taking you so long with your rig? (Just kidding Speedster!)

Here's my Class B Mid America Big Rig called O'l Red!
Of a stretched frame pusher axle Peterbuilt that's still a work in progress.

Just shot the clear on.

Eagle,

Most all of my detail parts are made from wood .. Fuel tanks are made from dowel rods , clearance lights are made from ends off toothpicks.
Air horns are made from dowel rods that i turn on the drill press using small files to shape them .. same for the air cleaners.
For the smoke stacks.. I like using small aluminum tubing:
Image
For the heat shields I like to use Woodmate Mr. Grip Repair kits for this detail.
Image
Some times i like to make sunvisors for the trucks as well. for those I use aluminum pop cans.. This truck will have one on it that i just put it on.
However I have not took photos of it on the truck at this time!
For the windshield & door glass.. I use clear plastic sheets.. cut and shape to fit inside the cab.

In the plum crazy semi truck topic & build i did sometime back.. I share some photos of how i make a lot of the wooden detail parts with a scroll saw.

You will not believe this.
Just yesterday I said to my wife, "Whoda will probably build a whole truck while I'm trying to get mine ready to test just the chassis".
I will not be showing my wife the Whoda Peterbilt. I hope there's an award for design and I hope it goes to you.
Beautiful Truck !!!

Well Speedster,
I bet I can make your night .. tonight!

I found this cool paint job on a semi truck on my I phone today.. and thought id try and do the same paint scheme to the truck tonight!
Image of the truck seen on my I phone:
Image
Well all went well for the driver side of the truck but the passenger side is a different story!
Thought id try this paint detail using Testers model paints and let every thing dry for 3 hours.. before one last coat of clear.
Driver side:
Image
and now your night maker.. and my nightmare! (the passenger side) That I should of let dry a little bit longer. :wall:
Image
So when all this miss this is good and dry... my thoughts for fixing this bleeding nightmare.. is reversing the color combinations.
Paint every thing gold.. and do the strips in white .
It's not what i wanted.. but hope it will work out for the next painting go around!
( Plus I'm going to let it dry for a day.. before shooting the next clear coat!)

Eagle,
Here is that Sunvisor made from a pop can.. and the mirrors i made from some small paper clips , pop cans and solder together.
Image
The CB antennas are solder'ed on to the mirrors as well.. there made from small telephone cord wire and Indian seed beads.

Do you have a side view picture of the Chassis before anything was attached to it? It appears the bottom is not a simple flat piece of wood. I'm wondering if you did something specific where the dominant wheels are inserted to get bottom clearance.
While building my 1st truck I have learned the "Best" track is not my friend. I think originally my truck would have stopped at the bottom of the hill resting on both ends. This is not the same as building a 7" car.

The frame for the truck is all one piece of pine wood. The mid section from a side view was also cut out.
This pic show's it best as it resting on a flat piece of wood to keep it off its wheels.
Image

Bottom View of the truck frame:
It's a ladder frame type design with a balsa top covering the frame cut outs top side.
Image
You may note:
That the Mid America rules also say that the class b rigs cant be over 3 3/8'" wide as well.
So I set this truck up to ride on 3 wheels.. the two sets of wheels in front of the rear are also raised off the track.

Plus in the pic you may note that these wheels are also moved out words away from the frame so they don't rub on the track rails..
To do this I cut small strips of wood and drilled them and glued them on the frame later using spare axles to line them up with my drilled axle holes in the frame.
So that these wheels could be moved out from the frame.

I think you meant not rub the rails.

Nice to see your craftsmanship is just as nice on the parts most don't see.

I really like your Big Rig stands!

Thank's Eagle

Yes moved out so they don't drag on the rail!
The truck stands are just something thrown together to rest the tucks on and keep all the weight off the wheels .

Speedster,
Here is a close up pic of the wooden blocks I made to move the wheels out!
Image
I don't know if this pic will help you out or not.. but should give you the idea of why I moved them out!

Looks like your piece of track isn't long enough for a Big Rig either.

Thank you. You've not only answered my questions but gave me a good idea. That makes a lot of sense to move those wheels out.

I can't speak for anyone else but it would be nice if someone who knew what he/she was doing would start a Post titled "How to build a Class "B" Big Rig."
There are problems to be aware of. That person might suggest to NOT use Basswood for the chassis.
