Weird Nails in kits...
Weird Nails in kits...
We sorted our nails tonight, 2 of about 45 were goofy...
they had thicker-looking heads, the edges of the head were more rounded, and they had 5 "stripes" from the grippers of the forge.
Usually we only see 2 stripes, I think...
their diameter measured same as other nails, and they were straighter by far than most nails (I'd rank them the 2nd-best we found)...
they were slightly longer...
We decided against them just since they were odd, and had more stripes to polish out...
anybody run into this before?

While sorting through my nails the other night, I noticed some had 2 stripes, and some 3. I found that odd.
Nothing like you described tho.
(I don't bother to remove them, just orient them so they are up, the wheels touch the bottom of the nail, on the other side.)

I don't have a good digital camera (spent my money this year on a pro shaver, hahahahah!)...
I will save these critters and expose them with a pic soon...

I think I had several of those in the BSA Speed kit last year. The ones I had were staighter and the heads were well centered. I used them in my son's car and he placed First in his division, second overall.

Re: Weird Nails in kits...
We found a nail this year with 2 heads. I was able to flick the second one off fairly easily.
I still think the grooves should go. I know that they can be oriented away from the contact area. But when the car hits a bump there is always the chance the grooves will contact the rotating bore. After polishing the bore I can't see chancing the finish with a contact event however short that event is. Plus it gives my son another task to challenge himself with.

we too ranked these as some of the straightest nails we received in the kits...Pack38dad wrote:I think I had several of those in the BSA Speed kit last year. hmmmmm....
might be something to look for in future purchases of spare wheels/nails.
We wanted to have matched axles, so we saved our 2 odd-balls but are not planning to use them this year.

I've noticed a few with heads that are way off center.

I think every one of mine were pretty off center. Not too big of a deal, by the time I work off the mold marks an taper the heads they are about 1/2 the original size and symetical.t_ruge wrote:I've noticed a few with heads that are way off center.
Re: Weird Nails in kits...
I think our judges would bust us for reducing the head that much... even though nail mods are allowed... I'll check the rules to see... if the judge rules the nail as "non-BSA" we'd get sidelined is the worry...SpinDoctor wrote:I think every one of mine were pretty off center. I agree, I don't mess with the nail head. We de-burr the bottom, and remove the grooves, but thats it.
