Back from districts! Video of powered derby car now posted.
We had our districts this morning. It was a blast. My boys cars did well. This was my oldest son's last derby, since he has crossed over into Boy Scouts. He had a car jump track and hit his, which slowed his car considerably. He still managed a respectable 9th overall, after qualifying 5th in the first round. My youngest son finished 2nd overall. We still have some work to do, but two more years to do it! The car on the left finished 9th, right finished 2nd
I ran my powered derby car as well (as an exhibition)
It was scary fast. On our Pack's 49 ft. Best Track, the fast times for a regular derby car were in the low 3.6's. The fan powered car was cutting consistent 1.7's! 1.7 seconds from a standing stop to the end of a 49 foot track!! My wife videotaped the run, and I'll post it if it came out OK.
Fun was had by all!

Glad to do it Hawkchucker:
Used two 15a long lever microswitches
Used one 15a toggle switch
Used one "11.1v 20C Max35C 850mAh Lipo Battery For Align Trex 250"
And one ducted fan
Everything but the ducted fan I got off of eBay. I got the fan at a local hobby shop. Of course the wheels are outlaw wheels from Derbyworx.
Thanks for your interest! It was as much fun to build as it was to race.

That video is awesome..... really cool. My son want to know if that will pass our packs inspection

Wow! It's really something to see actual video of that car smoking up the 49 footer!
Simply Outstanding!

Which hobby shop?
Got a manufacturer/brand for the ducted fan?
Trying to cut down any searching time for myself here.

My kids got a laugh from the video, and then my son asked if we could build one. I reviewed our rules from last year and, surprisingly, use of a ducted fan is not forbidden by our local Pack rules as written, as long as the car remained within dimension and weight (although we suspect it would more than raise the eyebrows of inspectors! ).
Q: The description says that two micro-switches were used, but only one seemed visible in the photo. Where / how is the other switch used? Is that it tucked into the body beside the large on/off switch? Does it serve as a kill switch when the car runs (or rather, flies!) up on the braking skid?

new to forum! wha was the total weight of fan car?
That was a riot! I love the concpet. A whole new race is born.
For giggles I doubled the weight of one of my cars to 10 oz. I had very simular results, but no fan. I am really curious if the car moves on its own a level surface. At wieht of 5 ounce I estimate that it will take a fan that can produce 670 CFM's to move the car if it was standing still with similar drag coeficiants on the wheels and axil.
Funny as all heck!

I tested my prop powered car on the floor and it moved on its own no problem. Ended up denting the nose as it hit a door jam. It moved much faster than expected.Derbyoldman wrote:For giggles I doubled the weight of one of my cars to 10 oz. I had very simular results, but no fan. I built a fan powered car too ! Race is this weekend.
I have the track set up in my basement, and My car does 1.7's too
I see that you added a second switch on the bottom to turn the fan off when it hits the braking section of the track. I didn't think of that, it's a great idea. I don't think I have enough time to add one this year
I post some pictures and video next week.
