SEMA Derby Rules - Just for ha-has

I was looking on the SEMA website and came across their rules for last year's charity derby race. Sema is the Specialty equipment marketing association and is the group that most autoparts manufacturers belong to. They have an awards banquet every year and last year added a derby race to raise money for charity. Anyway, here are the rules. If you know of a company in your area that is a member, give them a call to see if they want help building their car for this year!


Updated June 10th 2008 Rules for SEMA Cares Pine Wood Drag Races The Inaugural Dub Publishing /Fellers Pine Wood Drag Races 1) $125.00 Charity Donation for Stock Class. Comes complete with one pinewood drag car kit. Car will be shipped directly to you. 2) $150.00 Charity Donation for Modified Class. Comes complete with one pinewood drag car kit. Car will be shipped directly to you. 3) $200.00 Charity Donation for unlimited class. Comes with one pinewood drag car kit. Car will be shipped directly to you. 4) Additional cars for test builds, etc can be purchased for a donation of $20.00 each. 5) Race to be run the day of the SEMA installation summer banquet and Gala Fund Raiser July 25th 2008. Tech inspection to begin at 8.00am. Racing to begin at 1.00pm Tech cut off is 4.00pm. 6) Proceeds go to SEMA Cares. 7) Awards to be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each class. Additional awards to be given for best paint, best cheat, most original, peoples choice award. 8) Maximum 252 cars to be entered. ( 42 heats plus final rounds) Rules: Stock Class 1) Supplied Pinewood Drag car kit must be used. 2) Maximum weight limit is 6.00 ounces. The official race track scale shall be considered final. Rules- Stock Class Continued. 3) The wheels supplied with the kit must be used. The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded in any way. You may remove the seam from the wheels. ( SLIGHT sanding to remove the seam on the wheel only) 4) Stock wood axles must be used and can not be modified in any form. 5) Stock wheel screws/axles must be used and can not be modified in any form. They may be polished and lubricated using a dry lube only. 6) Stock location of axles must be used and can not be modified in any form. The axles can not exceed a distance greater than 6.0 inches measured center to center. 7) Stock height of the axles must be used and can not be modified in any form. 8) The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7.0 inches 9) The overall width of the car including the wheels shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches. 10) The car must have a minimum of 1 ¾ clearance between the wheels. 11) The car must have a minimum of 3/8 clearance underneath the body. 12) The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block can be shaped in any form or way that is desired. 13) Wheel bearings, washers or bushings of any kind on or near the wheels are prohibited. ( the wheels and hub centers must remain stock) 14) The car can not ride on any type of springs. Rules- Stock Class Continued 15) The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devises or added devices that can add propulsion at anytime during the race. 16) No loose material of any kind such as lead shot, mercury etc may be used. 17) The car body may not have any moving parts inside or outside of it. 18) All four wheels must touch the track at the time of the race. Rules: Modified Class 1) Supplied Pinewood Drag car kit must be used. 2) Maximum weight limit of the vehicle is 6.00 ounces. The official race track scale shall be considered final. 3) The wheels supplied with the kit must be used. The wheels may be cut, drilled, beveled, thinned out or rounded. 4) The stock wood axles must be used but may be modified. 5) The stock wheel screws/axles must be used and can be modified. They may be lubricated using a dry lube only. 6) The stock location of the axles may be modified 7) The stock height of the axles may be modified however you will still need enough clearance under the body to not bottom out on the track. ( approx minimum of 3/8 inch clearance needed) 8) The overall length of the car with wheels shall not exceed 7.5 inches including the wheels 9) The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches 10) The wood provided in the kit must be used. Rules: Unlimited Class 1) At least one part from the supplied Pinewood Drag Race kit must be used somewhere on the car. 2) Maximum weight limit of the vehicle is 8.0 ounces. The official race track scale shall be considered final. 3) The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7.5 inches including the wheels 4) The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches 5) The car must have a minimum of 3/8 clearance underneath the body or it may bottom out on the track. 6) The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices or added external devises that can add propulsion at anytime during the race. 7) NEW- As most unlimited cars shall have the ability to use bearings in the wheels, liquid lubricants may be used. Additional Rules – All Classes 1) If during a race, a car leaves the track without interfering with its opponent, it shall be considered to have ended its heat at that point. 2) If a car leaves its lane, at his sole discretion, the track chair may inspect the track, and if a track fault is found which caused the initial violation, the track chair may order the race to be re-run after the track is repaired. 3) If during the race, no car reaches the finish line on the track, the car which went the farthest in its lane shall be declared the winner. 4) If during a race, a car leaves its lane and in so doing, interferes with another racer, then the car at fault shall be declared to have lost the race heat. 5) Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered Teflon “white lube” will be allowed for lubricating the wheels in the stock and modified classes. Liquid lubricants may be used in the unlimited class. Lubricants may not foul up the track in anyway or the violating vehicle will be disqualified. 6) Only one lubrication run is allowed before the beginning of the first race and then once again before the beginning of the first race of the semi finals and finals. 7) Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting and interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications. 8) Electronic timers at the end of the track to be used. There may also be a slow motion video timer for final result checks. Additional Rules – All Classes- continued 9) All cars will be impounded after tech inspection and can only be given back to the builder/team for lubrication at the semi final and final rounds. 10) The official timers will determine the winner of each heat, semi finals and finals. All information from the timer and or the event chairman shall be considered final. 11) Betting is considered illegal, however if side bets are made, a considerable proportion of the winnings must be donated back to the event. 12) Width of each lane is approx 3 ½ inches 13) Event chair shall have final say on all rules, regulations and race results. Race chair shall not be persuaded by any current or former SEMA chairman. 14) Rules subject to updates 15) Race sponsor logos will be provided and must appear on all entries.
