How do you display your cars?

Post by roosclan »

So, after 3 years in Cub Scouts, I began to wonder what to do with all of these cars that were accumulating in my garage. I now have 3 boys in scouts, so the shelf in my garage was beginning to look like a used car lot.

The solution came to me from one of the modeling forums I frequent:
A display case!

Granted, the case can't be built for $15 (that's in 2004 dollars), but it only cost me about $25 to build. It houses the boys' PWD cars, and also the model cars they are building. There is room for growing, as my Webelo1 has another car to add in 2010, and my Wolf has at least 3 more cars to add.

2nd row: 2008 oldest son on the right
3rd row: 2009 oldest to youngest right to left (I'm a lefty, what can I say! I do things backwards)

Without the nasty glare:

And a gratuitous pic of the PWD corner:

3 years of trophies, with the first year (2007) consisting of just three on the far right. 2008 and 2009 were much, much better. The problem is that I put the shelves up this year, and they are already crammed full with nowhere to put more that are out of reach of the little brothers.

So, let's see how you display your cars!

This is one of the two display cases I use. They were a gift from my mom.

In a few more years, I'll need a third display case, but I'm not sure where I can put it!

(That reminds me, I have a lot of derby car photos I still need to publish...)

2 races each year - Pack and District. We didn't go to District our first year, but we have the last 2 years.
2007: 3 trophies from the pack race
2008: Pack - 1st in each den (2), 1st and 2nd grand finals (2). District - 1st in each den (2), 1st and 4th grand finals (2)
2009: Pack - 1st in each den (3), 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grand finals (3). District - 1st in each den (the 3 medals), 1st and 2nd grand finals (2).

I built a display case for each of my 3 kids. Each case holds 9 cars, which is just enough to hold all the cars built for Awana and pack races over the years. Dowels are used to hold the cars, with the rear dowels a bit higher than the fronts to give a better view of the cars. You can't tell from this photo, but the outside of each case is painted in the color of each kid's choice (Amanda - Red, Evan - Orange, Ryan - Blue) to personalize them a bit.

One of these days, I'll make up a set of plans for this and post it.

Now that looks like an even better idea! I hadn't thought about using dowel rods. That might make it less expensive, too. It wouldn't work for the model cars, but I could use this case for that and have a new cases for the PWD cars.

Please do post those plans...

I've since modified the display a little in that I added a thick black felt as the backdrop on top of the wooden 1/4" birch backing, and the wooden dowels are painted flat black...a much better look then all stain...

Is anyone else getting a case of display envy? :scratching:
I think I may have to submit to a winter project of making a display case. ;)

I'm well versed in Scripture (I have a BA in Theology); it was meant to be good-natured ribbing of a pastor. I noticed that the last smilie that I thought I put in there didn't make it into the post. I did have ;) at the end of it.
