Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
I've finally been in a position to look at the Chinese-made Revell wheels, now that our local Michaels store is stocking them. However, out of the couple of dozen sets left I've looked at so far, I have noticed no mold number higher than #4. So, does anyone know what are the valid Revell wheel mold nos.?
The newer Chinese-made wheels appear to be mold matched in the tube, with the inside of the wheel usually facing down (so you can see the mold number through the bottom of the tube). Black wheels appear to have a small white date code stamped on the back opposite of the embossed mold number, while colored wheels have a black date code. The axle nails are contained in a small plastic bag on top of the wheels. The tube lid is made out of the same thin transparent material as the tube and fits over the tube. The package label (and the wheel) include "Made in China".
The older USA-made wheels are not mold matched in the tube. The wheels are not usually oriented in any particular way in the tube. The axle nails are also loose in the tube. The tube lid is made out of sturdier plastic than the tube, either black or white, and fits in the tube. The package label (and the wheel) include "Made in USA".
It would be great if anyone might be in a position to stop by their local craft store and look through the stock to discover if mold numbers higher than 4 exist for the Chinese-made Revell wheels (even if you don't ever buy a Revell wheel set). There have been questions about their quality, so it might be nice to characterize them according to mold number as we tend to do with BSA wheels.

Thanks! Although I've not seen a 5 or 6, I now see where Paul also said he might have had a set of 6's.whodathunkit wrote:I recall seeing mold matched sets 1-6...
Any sightings of anything higher than 6?

Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
Your welcome FS,
Set's of #1's and #2's are all I have of these wheels.
Like you I would like to know if thay have molds 1-18 also.
I ran across this web site.
check out what thay say about these revell kits & wheels.
http://www.blackcreekbsa.org/NFC%20Pine ... 202012.pdf" target="_blank
The rules should (attempet to) dissuade the use of after market bodies, wheels, axels.
But as long as thay say "Official BSA'' on the inside of the wheel
thay are ok to use.
The chinese made ones also say "Official BSA"

Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
I'll have to double check the mold numbers on the Revell wheels I have when I get home. I gave away one set to a needy Tiger parent on race day who had ruined their wheels. (They had sanded the car with the wheels on it and had inadvertently sanded flat spots onto the wheels.) With my luck, those were the 6's. But I'll double check.
BTW, I had high hopes for the Revell axles. But every one I've tested has been crooked. Putting them into the Pro Axle Press does not seem to straighten them. I wonder if I have to use the Revell knockoff press instead?

Since I work right next door to a Hobby Lobby, I swung by there on a break. They only had 5 sets on the wall. Mold numbers 1 and 3 only. I'll still check at home whether or not I really have a 6.

The Revell press has gotten bad reviews (see also here). I have come across no evidence suggesting that it improves over the Derby Worx press.pgosselin wrote:I wonder if I have to use the Revell knockoff press instead?

Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
Just checked the wheels I have left in the basement. They're all 2s and 3s. So if I had some 6s, I gave them away. But I'm not sure I ever had them.
So for now I would assume I never had any 6s and made an error in my earlier post.

Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
Paul, I don't think you made an error.
Because at the time I picked the sets I got from Hobby Lobby
I can recall seeing some #6's as well.
The closest HL to me is in Dodge City KS, Allmost 2 hours away.
I dont make there very offten but when I do my wife can find me
looking at all the new PWD stuff that hits the shelfs.
Just trying to stay on top of whats new or old from this event.

Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
Local hobby store had four sets on the shelve and they were all mold #3.
The hobby store owner told me that they sold a bunch of them. I mentioned to him that they were actually illegal by the rules for our district. He was surprised. Hope no kids are turned back at check in based on this.

I just couldn't remember clearly so I didn't want to dig my heels in and send everybody on a wild goose chase. I'f you've seen them too, then they must exist.whodathunkit wrote:Paul, I don't think you made an error.

Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
what rules do you have that make the revel bsa wheels illegal.
is it made in the usa maybe
is it made in the usa maybe
Re: Chinese-made Revell wheel mold numbers
My district rules say that only wheels from the kit or wheels purchased from the scout shop can be used.
So, Revell wheels purchased at the hobby shop, or any modified wheels purchased online would be illegal.
