Thoughts on improving axle prep

Post by whodathunkit »

When preping axles useing the methods most seen on axle prep in the Pwd books.

The method most seen show..
That the sand paper is held with bouth hands useing the thumb & index fenger to hold the paper.
While pressure from the sand paper is applyed to the spining axle..

My thoughts are telling me that more pressure is being applyed to the outer edges then to the center of the sand paper.
And that the method of holding the sanding paper in this way could convex the axle..
as the pressure on the sanding paper would be concaved.

Could axle prep methods be improved by useing a known flat block of metal under the paper
to keep the pressure points more flat and even to the axle.

What are your thoughts for improveing the axle prep sanding methods.
What type of automobile can be spelled the same forwards & backwards?

We use a narrow piece of hardwood to back the paper as we sand. Added pressure seems to make the process go faster.

I back the paper with a comparably sized leather strap about 1/8" thick. Could have the same issues. The leather provide the pressure of paper against axle. Without the backing, the paper does not last as long (for me.)

Popcycle sticks work pretty good for this.
